Tesla will unveil the all-electric tractor truck Semi in September at the IAA Transportation 2026 event in Hannover. According to the company, the specifications for the European version along with further details about the planned market launch will be released there. The commercial vehicle exhibition takes place from September 15 to 20. Tesla previously displayed the Semi at the IAA Transportation in Hannover in 2024, and now the company is confirming its plans to bring it to Europe.

The announced presentation is particularly relevant because the technical and regulatory requirements in Europe differ from those of the North American market. So far, Tesla has not clearly explained in what configurations the Semi will be offered in the EU or when the first customer vehicles will be delivered. The current announcement merely states that technical data and details about the launch will be released at the exhibition.

"The Tesla Semi is a fully electric tractor-trailer designed for the future of freight transportation," says the manufacturer. "Compared to conventional tractor-trailers, it is more powerful and efficient. At the same time, it features lower operating costs and better driving performance."

Regional Tesla websites already list details for a Semi version labeled “Standard Range.” Tesla states that it has a total weight of 40 tons, a range of around 550 kilometers, three engines on the rear axles, a power output of up to 800 kW/1088 horsepower, and a curb weight of 9100 kilograms. The energy consumption is listed as 1.0 kWh per kilometer. Tesla also mentions the Megawatt Charging System in version MCS 3.2, as well as the ability to recharge up to 60 percent of the range in 30 minutes. According to Tesla, these specifications depend on the vehicle configuration. The company has not yet explicitly confirmed whether these exact figures apply to the European production version announced at the IAA.

This means that the figures currently listed on European Tesla pages differ in some cases from those on the U.S. website. There, Tesla advertises an estimated range of 500 miles, or about 805 kilometers, an energy consumption of 1.7 kWh per mile, and a charging capacity of up to 1.2 MW. These U.S. figures cannot be directly applied to the European vehicle. Therefore, for fleet operators, key details such as payload capacity, specific vehicle dimensions, range options, charging speed, pricing, and delivery dates will be important information from the upcoming presentation in Hannover.

Tesla enters the European commercial vehicle market, where battery-electric trucks are seeing significant growth but still account for a small share. According to data from the European manufacturers’ association ACEA, 4.8 percent of new truck registrations in the EU in the first half of 2026 were for externally chargeable vehicles. Their sales increased by 47.7 percent compared to the same period last year. Diesel trucks still made up 92.1 percent of registrations. Germany, the Netherlands, and France together accounted for 74 percent of EU registrations for electrically chargeable trucks.

For the practical use of semi-trucks in Europe, in addition to vehicle specifications, charging infrastructure is crucial. The EU regulation on the development of infrastructure for alternative fuels (AFIR) requires member states to gradually expand publicly accessible charging points for heavy electric commercial vehicles along the trans-European transport network. By the end of 2027, such charging locations are expected to cover at least 50 percent of the TEN-V road network.
