Sunwoda: We also have super fast battery charging! 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, 10% to 97% in 9 minutes!

Sunwoda is the fourth cell manufacturer after CATL, BYD, and Geely to join the group of companies promising megafast charging, which means restoring the battery to 100% capacity [actually: 97%] in less than 10 minutes. The company also claims that when the charging target is reduced to 70%, the charging time will be only 5 minutes. Additionally, a battery built using Sunwoda’s cells that can handle extremely high power levels still delivers over 700 CLTC miles of range.
Sunwoda: Megafast charging is a breeze. Charging times longer than refueling are unacceptable.
The range mention is important because there are already fast-charging cells available, but the trade-off for this feature is always lower energy density, meaning shorter range. If Sunwoda talks about “over 700 CLTC units,” this corresponds to around 550 WLTP units, which means batteries sufficient for driving 467 kilometers in urban or urban-suburban conditions or 252 kilometers at 140 km/h [preliminary calculations by Elektrowozu’s editorial team]. This range is roughly equivalent to that of the Skoda Enyaq 80/85 with an 82 (77) kWh battery.

Imagine then that such a hypothetical Skoda Enyaq 85 with a Sunwoda cell battery wouldn’t need to sit by the charger for nearly half an hour, but would only require 9 minutes to charge from 10% to 97% [3% is reserved for regenerative braking – editor’s note]. The extra 20 minutes could be used for driving. On paper, this doesn’t sound particularly impressive, but with the cruise control set at 143 km/h, the driver of an Enyaq with a Sunwoda battery would have almost 47 kilometers of advantage over a Skoda Enyaq with a real, factory-installed battery pack. Is that much or little?

If someone has children, they really don’t care anyway However, sales advisors could arrive at the client’s location 20 minutes earlier. Or leave home 20 minutes later. And if they charged to 70 percent instead of 97 percent, they would even be 24 minutes ahead of a real Skoda Enyaq. Compared to a gasoline car, the delay would be 5-9 minutes, but only assuming the previous owner filled up the car. If not, the delay essentially cancels out because refueling takes a short time, but the payment process can be slow — not to mention needing to drink coffee and smoke a cigarette
Sunwoda claims that its battery packs can be charged from 10 to 97 percent in 15 minutes, even in winter. This aligns well with BYD’s claims as well. Additionally, the manufacturer is willing to offer a warranty of up to 10 years or 300,000 kilometers, regardless of the number of fast charges. How is this possible? The company states that it uses silicon-enhanced anodes and AI-optimized charging algorithms, but it does not disclose further details. Unlike BYD or Geely, it cannot yet showcase ready-to-market vehicles.
Sunwoda is the fourth Chinese manufacturer to promise charging times under 10 minutes. So far, there are no companies from the United States (Tesla), Europe, Japan, or South Korea in this group.
