Subaru is removing its internal combustion engine models from Europe

Many people associate the Subaru brand primarily with its boxer engine. But starting in 2028, that will be the end of that at least in this region. The Japanese automaker is phasing out its internal combustion engine models in Europe. And the first model is set to disappear from showrooms as early as 2026.

While many manufacturers have eventually moved away from the boxer engine, aside from Porsche, only Subaru has firmly stuck to it. As electrification became increasingly necessary, this evolved into the mild-hybridized e-Boxer. But now its days seem to be truly numbered, as Subaru will no longer offer internal combustion engines starting in 2028. Although this decision applies only to Europe, it remains a crucial step for this niche manufacturer.

The Subaru Outback is set to disappear from the market by 2026, followed by the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester, whose sales are expected to cease in 2027, according to “Auto Motor und Sport.” The current electric lineup that will remain consists of the Uncharted in the compact class, the crossover Solterra, and the crossover SUV e-Outback, both falling into the mid-size category.

Tighter EU Fleet Emission Standards Force a Change of Course

Subaru cites strict EU regulations on CO2 fleet emission limits as the reason for phasing out internal combustion engines in Europe. Additionally, there are increasingly stringent rules regarding required assistance and safety systems. These adjustments are extremely costly and clearly not economically viable for the manufacturer.

On the side of importer Emil Frey, however, the mood is positive: “With the launch of our three fully electric models, we have reached a milestone this year,” Swiss magazine “Blick” quotes Peter Hug, spokesperson for Emil Frey. “The surprisingly high demand confirms that our strategy hits the mark.”

Independent electric platform starting in 2029

It is unknown whether Subaru will introduce further electric models to the European market by 2028. However, given the reduced lineup, this is quite plausible or even strategically necessary. A seven-seater flagship model above the e-Outback has already been unveiled in markets such as the US and Australia under the name Subaru Getaway. Although it is not planned for Europe yet, a modified version would fit well into the portfolio here as well.

In addition, Subaru is working on its own electric platform to bring independent models to market in the future and reduce reliance on Toyota. The new system utilizes more compact engines from Aisin and lighter batteries from Panasonic, providing a system output of around 375 kW for all-wheel drive. This new architecture is set to be used in production vehicles by 2029.
