STX Concept: Opel reveals its vision for the future station wagon

At the recent World Motor Show, Opel unveiled the STX Concept for the first time worldwide. This concept car showcases the German brand under Stellantis Group’s vision for the future station wagon. It represents a bold vision that marks a new stage in Opel’s stylistic evolution, combining German engineering with intelligent technologies. The design features a purer aesthetic, placing strong emphasis on emotion and characterized by a new lighting signature. The STX Concept also stands out through its pursuit of efficiency in every detail, achieved through sculpted body panels and the use of intelligent aerodynamic solutions. Finally, the interior is designed as an immersive and minimalist space. True to the “Painting with Light” approach, it focuses on the lighting experience.

A Bold Vision for the Future Station Wagon

As a pioneer of the station wagon in Europe, Opel played a major role in popularizing this vehicle type in the 1950s. The Opel Sports Tourer eXperimental Concept, or STX Concept, refers to the Sports Tourer models affected by the Blitz. But with this concept, Opel aims to go further and showcase its vision for the future station wagon—a bold vision of a 100% electric vehicle with all-wheel drive capable of exceeding 200 km/h. Combining German engineering with visionary design, the STX Concept represents a new milestone in the evolution of Opel’s stylistic language. The brand’s iconic front end appears even more daring than in its previous iterations. The STX Concept’s Vizor features increased height and prominence, fitting seamlessly into the vehicle’s proportions while emphasizing its distinctly German character.

A design that gives ample emphasis to emotion

The evolution of Opel’s stylistic language is also reflected in a purer and more emotional design. This emotion is particularly evident in the reinterpretation of the Opel Vizor. The new lighting signature consists of precisely angled vertical slats that define the contours of the Vizor before fading gradually toward its center. The illuminated Blitz Opel stands out in the center, while the characteristic hood line extends the front end. The same approach is used at the rear of the STX Concept, with a silhouette that stretches and slopes downward. The C-pillars serve as a perfect example of this. Glass light strips extend from the window line toward the rear, continuing into the STX Concept’s rear fender and creating unique visual accents. As it sharpens forward, the illuminated STX logo on the sides further enhances the synergy between cutting-edge technology and desirable design.

Efficiency pursued in every detail

In addition to aiming to evoke emotion, designers also sought to optimize efficiency without compromising the driving pleasure. Thus, the STX Concept features precisely sculpted lines and the use of intelligent aerodynamic solutions. Its sculpted body is distinguished by short overhangs and widely flared surfaces around the wheel arches. Optimized for aerodynamics, the three-part design alloy wheels contribute to a dynamic driving experience. The STX Concept also comes equipped with an active aerodynamic system that continuously adapts to driving conditions. At the rear, movable elements optimize air flow, reduce aerodynamic drag, and improve stability. At certain speeds, diffusers unfold beneath the vehicle’s rear section. Behind the wheels, vertical elements of the shield extend laterally toward the rear to enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

An immersive, minimalist cabin focused on lighting experience

True to the Painting with Light approach, Opel also emphasized lighting as a key element of the in-cabin experience. The interior was designed as an immersive, minimalist space focused heavily on the lighting experience. Creating a futuristic and emotional atmosphere, the lighting effects extend indoors the slat-like patterns visible on the exterior Vizor. The minimalist-designed cockpit reduces the number of visible elements to minimize distractions, allowing essential information to stand out. In this immersive environment, the interior delivers a high level of driving pleasure and comfort. To achieve this, Opel combined German engineering with intelligent technologies. Additionally, despite its low profile, the STX Concept retains the practical qualities traditionally associated with the brand’s station wagons.
