Tip #5: The basic Pro version has been removed; all models are charged at 800 volts

The Smart #5 received an update this summer. The base Pro version with 400-volt technology was removed, the Pro+ is now available in a special Black Collection edition, and the Pulse was replaced by the new Premium AWD version. We provide an overview of this series for you.
The Smart #5 is available for ordering since April 2025. Initially, six versions could be configured. The base Pro version with a 250-kW rear drive system and a 74.4 kWh (net) LFP battery offering 465 km of WLTP range is no longer available. This confirmed our suspicion. The cheapest option now is the Pro+ with a 267-kW rear drive system and the larger 94-kWh battery. As a result, the starting price rose from 45,900 euros (Pro) to 51,400 euros (Pro+).

Exterior
At 4.70 meters in length, the Smart #5 belongs to the mid-size SUV category. It is significantly longer than the Smart #3 (4.40 meters) and similar in height to the Smart #1. Its dimensions and design resemble those of the Mercedes EQB, with proportions similarly angular like those of the GLB. Smooth exterior surfaces are a distinctive feature.
The lighting design, with its eight horizontal bars on the front, is completely different from that of the #1 and #3 models. Smart states that the new model should appear more sophisticated. Two of the horizontal bars on each side are thicker and appear to form the headlights. The tail lights are designed in a similar manner. Another unique feature is the frameless side windows.

Interior
The Smart #5 unlocks automatically when approached. If the key is in the pocket, the door handles extend automatically. The vehicle does not have a start button. It is sufficient to place the lever on the right side of the steering wheel in the “D” position while keeping the foot on the brake. The mirrors must be adjusted via the touchscreen and the steering wheel controls. Otherwise, there are only a few physical control elements inside the cabin.
The Smart #5 also comes standard with a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 13.0-inch touchscreen in the center. The premium version adds an additional 13.0-inch passenger monitor as well as a head-up display. A voice assistant enables control of the navigation, audio system, and climate control. Thanks to AI support, it can also answer almost any question. During our test of the Smart #5 Brabus, the car was even able to recite a poem by Lord Byron. Leo serves as the new avatar guiding through the system — a lion.

The regenerative braking can be adjusted, but only via the touchscreen. There are Low, Medium, and Strong modes, plus a “s-Pedal” mode for one-pedal driving until complete stop. Adaptive regenerative braking is missing.

The trunk has a capacity of 630–1,530 liters; the load floor can be set at two different heights. Additionally, there is a frunk area with 72 liters in rear-wheel-drive models and 47 liters in all-wheel-drive models.
Powertrains and Battery
The Smart #5 is based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which supports both 400 and 800 volts. The 400-volt Pro version has since been discontinued. In the new 2027 model year, there are now five versions, with the Pro+, Pro+ Black Collection, and Premium variants having identical technical specifications. This leaves only three technically distinct versions:

Interestingly, the all-wheel-drive versions have an asynchronous motor in the front rather than a permanent magnet motor like the Smart #1 and #3. All versions use energy-saving silicon carbide technology, but only in the rear of the all-wheel-drive versions on the more powerful motor — which makes sense, as the ASM is likely to activate only when full power is needed, and efficiency isn’t as critical in that case.

The Smart #5 comes standard with up to 22 kW AC charging and up to 400 kW DC charging. This is designed to complete a full charge in 18 minutes. The charging speed is calculated as 94 kWh × 0.7 / 18 min = 3.7 kWh/min. Multiplying this value by 60 min/h gives the average charging speed in the 10–80 percent SOC range. Similarly, we calculated values for range recharging (e.g., 590 km × 0.7 / 18 min = 22.9 km/min).
In unofficial tests, the Smart #5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. This capability was demonstrated live to us at the test event in May 2025. However, Smart prefers more conservative figures to avoid disappointing customers. The Smart #5 also supports two-way charging.

More about the Smart #5:
In summary
The Smart #5’s model lineup is becoming simpler. There is now only one rear-wheel-drive version and two all-wheel-drive versions with different power outputs. All three variants use the same battery. The Smart #5 remains good at fast charging, but based on official figures, it no longer ranks among models with the fastest charging speeds.
