Slovenia discontinues EV purchase subsidies

Slovenia will no longer provide subsidies for the purchase of EVs and will instead shift its focus to expanding charging infrastructure. This decision is part of a broader energy policy realignment by the new government under Prime Minister Janez Janša.

According to media reports, funding for the purchase of electric cars in Slovenia ran out abruptly in mid-August due to high demand – and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure initially responded with a statement that no new funds would be allocated for the time being. This month, Energy and Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec followed up by announcing that the state “will definitely discontinue subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles”. Vrtovec is part of a new government led by right-wing conservative Prime Minister Janez Janša, who in May replaced his left-liberal predecessor Robert Golob and his administration.

As Urška Kalan, Deputy Director of Borzen, Slovenia’s public electricity market operator and subsidy coordinator, now states, there is a shift in priorities. The new government will focus more on expanding charging infrastructure. “Around €2.5 million is available for slower charging stations, and next year approximately €25 million will be allocated for charging stations within and outside the TEN-T network,” Kalan is quoted as saying in Slovenian media.

A significant portion of previous e-mobility subsidies came from the European Union. Under Slovenia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, €43.9 million had been reserved for promoting electric vehicles for the period 2024 to 2026. This funding source expired in May, meaning future measures will primarily have to be financed from national funds.
