Skoda Elroq back at the top of new vehicle registrations in July

After the Tesla Model Y topped the list of new electric vehicle registrations in Germany by a large margin in June, the Skoda Elroq took back the lead in July. Meanwhile, this compact SUV, starting at 37,890 euros, has also been number one in cumulative totals since the beginning of the year.
July 2026 was once again a strong month for electric mobility in Germany – indeed, an exceptionally good one: The market share of electric vehicles among all new registrations across various propulsion types rose to 29.3 percent, the highest level ever recorded. In absolute terms, 78,609 pure electric vehicles hit Germany’s roads new that month.
With some delay, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has now also released the model figures. This allows us to provide you with an overview of the currently most popular electric cars in Germany through our eMobility dashboard.
In July, an old familiar name topped the list: the Skoda Elroq with 3,541 new registrations, having previously been at the top in May. Following closely behind is the VW ID.7 with 3,247 new registrations, and just a bit further down is the VW ID.4 / ID.5 with 3,241 new registrations. In other words, gold, silver, and bronze all go to models based on Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Platform (MEB).
Things get more varied after the top 3
The rest of the top 10 is a more varied mix: The BMW iX1 climbs one place to fourth in the ranking compared to June, thanks to 2,901 new registrations. Following it are the Skoda Enyaq with 2,868 new registrations, the all-electric Mercedes CLA with 2,514 new registrations, and the VW ID.3 with 2,220 new registrations.
Mini occupies eighth place with 2,204 new BEV registrations. However, the KBA combines all three all-electric Mini models—Mini Cooper Electric, Mini Aceman Electric, and Mini Countryman Electric—in its figures. As a result, the Mini figure slightly distorts the ranking.

The top 10 are completed by the Audi Q6 e-tron with 2,083 new registrations and the Cupra Born with 1,978 new registrations. It’s also interesting to look at the newcomers: The BMW iX3 ranked 13th with 1,648 new registrations, bringing it close to the top 10. Its direct competitor, the all-electric Mercedes GLC, had 1,472 units registered (rank 16). The Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric achieved 1,295 new registrations (rank 18).
It’s interesting to note that currently, around 2,000 electric cars per month are needed just to make it into the top 10 of the best-selling electric vehicles in Germany. Below that number, it’s nearly impossible to rank among the top. Looking back three years, about 1,000 units per month were sufficient to secure a spot in the top 10. This also reflects the significant growth in the overall electric vehicle market, as in July 2023, despite being at the peak of the initial electric vehicle incentives program, around 30,000 fewer electric cars were registered—48,682 units in total.
Tesla’s Rollercoaster in Registrations
The development at Tesla remains particularly striking. The Model Y is still in third place for the year so far with 20,000 registrations, but it only saw 299 new registrations in July — down from first place in June with 6,023 units. For the Model 3, July saw just 56 vehicles registered (after 1,708 units in June). As a result, neither Tesla model made it close to the top tier in July.
For comparison, the monthly average for the Model Y from January to July was around 2,857 units. The July figure represents just over one-tenth of this average. A likely explanation for this volatility is that Tesla follows a global sales and logistics strategy that focuses deliveries heavily on the end of each quarter (March, June, September, and December).
Notably, the situation at BYD is also striking: while the Chinese company initially positioned itself in Germany as a pure electric vehicle brand, it now generates most of its sales there from plug-in hybrids. In July, 3,289 out of BYD’s total 5,240 new vehicle registrations were plug-in hybrids, compared to only 1,951 battery electric vehicles. Thus, electric vehicles accounted for just 37 percent of BYD’s sales. It’s no wonder that none of BYD’s electric vehicles made it into the top 10. There are also no entries in the top 30.
Trend since the beginning of the year
Let’s now take a look at the overview since the beginning of the year, and thus at the top 10 of the most popular electric cars from January to July. As with the monthly analysis, the Skoda Elroq leads once again — with 23,679 new registrations in Germany. Following it are the VW ID.3 with 20,460 new registrations, and the Tesla Model Y with the previously mentioned 20,000 new registrations. Next are the Skoda Enyaq with 19,352 units and the VW ID.7 with 17,905 registrations.

The strongest presence in the top 10 is clearly that of the Volkswagen Group: six out of the ten most successful model series come from them, including Skoda Elroq and Enyaq, Volkswagen ID.3, ID.7, and ID.4/ID.5, as well as Audi’s A6 e-tron. BMW is also well-represented with the X1 (13,061 units), along with its subsidiary Mini (10,954 new BEV registrations), and Mercedes with its all-electric CLA (13,546 units).
