The Skoda Elroq leads in new electric car registrations in August

In August, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 212,563 passenger cars were newly registered. This represented a 2.6 percent increase compared to the previous month. Among electric-powered vehicles, pure electric cars saw a 75.1 percent increase with 68,930 new registrations, accounting for 32.4 percent of the total.

The Skoda Elroq was the most registered electric car in Germany in August 2026. With 3,038 new registrations, this compact SUV led clearly according to the KBA. Following behind are the similarly compact BMW iX1 with 2,449 units, and the VW ID.7, designed for the upper mid-class as a sedan and hatchback, with 2,236 new registrations.

Models from the Volkswagen Group also dominate the following positions. The mid-size SUV VW ID.4, along with its coupe version ID.5, ranks fourth with 2,189 new registrations, followed by the battery-powered version of the mid-size Mercedes SUV GLC with 2,164 units, and the mid-size SUV Skoda Enyaq with 2,140 units. Thus, the Volkswagen Group alone has four models in the top six.

In the rest of the top 10, the strength of German premium brands is evident. The upper mid-size Audi A6 e-tron and the mid-size Mercedes-Benz CLA with electric drive each achieved 1,749 new registrations; both are available as sedans and wagons. Slightly behind them is the Audi Q6 e-tron, which starts in the upper mid-size segment as a SUV and SUV coupe, with 1,738 units registered.

The Citroën ë-C3 provides contrast among the many SUVs and premium models. With 1722 new registrations, this electric compact car ranks 10th. The gap between positions 7 and 10 in the top 10 is extremely small, with only 27 vehicles separating them.

Overall, the August ranking of new car registrations in Germany shows a clear dominance by European manufacturers. The Volkswagen Group is particularly strong: Skoda, VW, and Audi together account for six of the top ten best-selling electric car models of the month. The range spans relatively affordable small cars to premium and mid-range electric models.
