The Skoda Elroq remains at the top of new car registrations even in August.
The Skoda Elroq maintained its lead in new electric vehicle registrations in Germany in August. With 3,038 units sold, it once again far outpaced its competitors. This time, the BMW iX1 came in second place, while the new Mercedes GLC made its debut in the top 10.
August 2026 saw a new record for the German electric vehicle market in terms of market share this year: 32.4 percent of all newly registered cars were fully electric. This equates to 68,930 electric vehicles out of a total of 212,563 new car registrations. In July, the share of BEVs was still at 29.3 percent, but with a higher absolute volume of 78,609 electric vehicles. Compared to August 2025, when there were 39,367 BEVs, the current figure represents a 75.1 percent increase.
It appears that the federal government’s electric vehicle incentives, launched in May, are also showing increasing effects, although the KBA does not provide specific data on this. The BAFA has approved nearly 52,500 applications so far—about 25,600 of them in the previous month alone.
The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) has now released model-specific figures. They show that the Skoda Elroq managed to maintain its leading position from July. In July, this MEB electric vehicle regained the top spot from the Tesla Model Y with 3,541 new registrations. In August, Skoda needed 3,038 units to take first place—503 fewer than the month before. This decline is significantly smaller compared to some of its direct competitors.
BMW iX1 moves up to second place
An unusual scene unfolds in the top rankings later on. Typically, Volkswagen Group and Tesla claim the first three spots. After finishing fifth in June and fourth in July, the BMW iX1 improved by two positions and secured second place in August with 2,449 new registrations.
Behind it is the VW ID.7 with 2,236 units, dropping one position as a result. The pair of Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 combined have 2,189 new registrations and fell from third to fourth place. The ID.4, and consequently the ID.5 as well, are expected to become the ID. Tiguan. The new name is considered finalized. Even details of its exterior design have leaked ahead of the world premiere, including in video footage.

The most notable newcomer is the all-electric Mercedes GLC. It is well known that the GLC sells well, and deliveries of this model are also on the rise. Thus, the increased production levels reported in May are reflected in the changes to KBA’s model statistics. After 1,472 new registrations and ranking 16th in July, the model reached 2,164 units by August, placing it fifth. This represents an increase of 692 vehicles, or about 47 percent. The Skoda Enyaq follows in sixth place with 2,140 new registrations.
Mercedes CLA and Audi A6 e-tron share the same rank
In seventh place, there is a special case: both the Mercedes-Benz CLA (see our review here) and the Audi A6 e-tron have exactly 1,749 new registrations, so they share this position. There is no eighth place this month. For the CLA, 1,749 new registrations represent a drop from sixth place, while the Audi has moved up four places compared to July. The top 10 are completed by the Audi Q6 e-tron in ninth place with 1,738 units and the Citroën ë-C3 in tenth place with 1,722 new registrations.
Compared to July, three models from the top group have dropped out. The decline is most noticeable in the VW ID.3: after 2,220 new registrations and seventh place in July, it saw 1,467 units and 14th place in August. However, this decline is also related to the transition to the new ID.3 Neo (see our review here).
The electric microcars compiled by KBA are also losing ground. Their registrations dropped from 2,204 to 1,351 vehicles, pushing them down to 19th place. The Cupra Born also fell out of the top 10. With 1,978 new registrations in July, it was followed by 1,005 units in August, placing it at 22nd.
The Cupra Raval narrowly missed the top 10: This new electric compact car had 1,663 new registrations in August, ranking it 11th. Right behind it is the Tesla Model 3 with 1,605 units, thus surpassing the Model Y. The Model Y was still the leader in June with 6,023 new registrations but dropped to just 299 vehicles in July. It then saw 1,426 units in August. The large differences between months are consistent with Tesla’s deliveries often concentrated toward the end of each quarter.
Elroq Extends Its Lead Since the Start of the Year
In the cumulative view from January to August, the Skoda Elroq also leads. With 26,717 new registrations, it widened its lead over the VW ID.3, which had 21,927 units, to 4,790 vehicles. The Skoda Enyaq moves up to third place with 21,492 new registrations, just ahead of the Tesla Model Y with 21,426 units.
In fifth place is the VW ID.7 with 20,141 new registrations. Following behind are the VW ID.4/ID.5, BMW iX1, and Mercedes-Benz CLA. The two Audi models, A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, complete the top 10 for the year, with the Q6 e-tron having only 19 vehicles ahead of the Mini at 12,324 units. Thus, seven out of the ten most registered electric models come from the Volkswagen Group.
