E.ON and Clever’s Scandinavian retail network is being split up

The joint venture established in 2018 by E.ON Drive Infrastructure and Clever to operate ultra-fast charging stations on Scandinavian highways is being dissolved. The current 157 fast charging stations in the network are shared among the two joint venture partners and an external company.

The fast charging stations of the “Powered by E.ON Drive & Clever” network are currently located at 37 highway sites in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Previously, they were owned by a 50:50 joint venture between E.ON Drive Infrastructure and Clever. However, after eight years, the partners are dissolving the joint venture, and the fast charging sites are changing owners: Clever will take over the Danish stations, E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) will take over the Swedish ones, and Uno-X Mobility, which was not part of the joint venture, will purchase the Norwegian stations.

Clever will take over all six Danish highway locations of the joint-venture charging network, which include a total of 48 fast-charging stations, and plans to integrate them into its own public network before the end of the year. Additionally, in a separate transaction, it will acquire a large charging park from E.ON Drive Infrastructure located on highway E45 (exit 56 “Horsens West”), comprising 14 charging points.

E.ON Drive Infrastructure will simultaneously become the sole owner of the 19 highway locations in Sweden, with a total of 80 HPC charging points. In Norway, the aforementioned third party will enter the scene: Uno-X Mobility Norge AS will become the owner and operator of the twelve Norwegian locations.

The end of the joint venture “Powered by E.ON Drive & Clevers” marks further consolidation in the Scandinavian charging market. The company was founded in 2018 by E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) and Clever to facilitate long-distance driving of electric vehicles across Scandinavia. “Our goal remains the same as when we launched ‘Powered by E.ON Drive & Clever,’” says Mathias Langkilde Sukstof, head of network strategy at Clever, now as the joint venture comes to an end. “It should be simple to drive an electric vehicle.” The only difference now is that charging stations are integrated with their respective providers.

Most recently in Sweden, Vattenfall InCharge had already announced its intention to acquire Nima Energy’s fast charging business. Almost simultaneously, the Norwegian charging infrastructure company Eviny Fast Charging and Statkraft’s subsidiary Mer announced their merger. The reallocation of “Powered by E.ON Drive & Clever” among E.ON Drive Infrastrukture, Clever, and Uno-X represents the next transaction in this dynamic Scandinavian competitive landscape.
