Answer. A first turning point came for charging stations on April 13, 2024, with the entry into force of the EU AFIR Regulation. The regulation stipulated that charging could take place without having to enter into a contract with the charging provider. It also required that “universal” electronic payment tools be made available to users, such as POS machines for debit cards or credit cards. This requirement applied (and still applies) only to newly installed chargers. For those already in use, compliance is required by January 1, 2027. There is also a significant change in terms of prices and clarity of offerings, putting an end to often confusing pricing structures. Providers are obliged to display transparent and comparable costs, based on actual consumption in kWh for the most powerful stations, effective from April 13, 2024.

A turning point is approaching, but many operators are already adapting

Many operators have been upgrading their networks for some time now, even for existing charging stations. The option to charge using cards or ATMs is also becoming increasingly common. For example, Free to X, which operates the high-power charging network in Autostrade per l’Italia’s network, has been updating all its stations for a long time. Like Villoresi Est on the A8 Milan Varese route, which has 5 HPC charging stations all accessible via credit cards. This applies not just to a single terminal but across the entire infrastructure. Another requirement imposed by the EU is 24/7 digital connectivity for all charging stations, allowing vehicle systems to know in real time the actual availability and efficiency of charging points along the route.
