Shell Recharge upgrades fast charging stations in Germany

By the end of August 2026, Shell Recharge has upgraded a total of 150 fast charging stations at over 40 locations in Germany. According to the oil giant, the goal is to improve the availability and reliability of the public fast charging network for electric vehicles. At least another 50 charging stations are set to be equipped with new hardware by the end of the year.

By replacing older charging systems, Shell Recharge is investing in the quality and reliability of its charging infrastructure. The new fast charging systems are designed to offer significantly higher technical stability. Additionally, the charging capacity at selected locations will be increased.

Customers are expected to benefit primarily from higher availability of charging stations and more reliable charging processes. “The next phase of electric mobility will not be determined solely by the number of charging stations, but by their reliability in everyday use,” says Florian Glattes, head of Shell Mobility Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. “That’s why we proactively invest in modernizing our charging network. Electric vehicle drivers should be able to rely on their charging processes starting smoothly and functioning reliably.”

“Modern hardware is an important component of our EV offerings,” Glattes adds. “This also includes a user-friendly charging process, various payment options, digital services, and close monitoring of locations—along with targeted convenience offerings in the shop and Shell Café.”

According to Shell, it currently operates around 2,400 fast charging stations in Germany and continues to expand its network. This expansion takes place both at its own locations and in partnership with other companies. “Through this modernization program, Shell Recharge underscores its long-term commitment to developing a reliable charging infrastructure in Germany and supports the further spread of electric vehicles,” the company states.
