SF Chronicle: More and more of this new type of drivers on the streets. They don’t drive; they turn on FSD, sometimes to take a nap

The San Francisco Chronicle describes a quiet revolution taking place on the city’s streets. An increasing number of drivers are choosing to hand over control to automation, more precisely, Tesla’s FSD (Supervised). There are no complaints that “driving brings pleasure,” as there is a high level of trust in the software due to its effectiveness in everyday use. Exact statistics are not available, but this phenomenon has already become tangible, even in professional settings (Uber).

As our reader, Mr. Wojciech, who recently drove almost 4,000 kilometers in the United States using FSD, wrote to us: “This is true magic; it changes everything. The [model] of the car becomes less important than FSD. People won’t choose cars based on their engine, range, or appearance. They will choose them based on how well and safely its ‘operating system’, that is, FSD, handles driving.”

The San Francisco Chronicle has noticed this surge in automation. The newspaper observes that an increasing number of cars are driving autonomously. And this doesn’t refer to legally regulated autonomous taxis, but rather ordinary Teslas operated in FSD (Supervised) mode under human oversight. The Uber driver featured in the article switches to automatic driving so he can “have lunch, scroll through his phone, and even take a nap from time to time.” He admits, however, that he only does this outside working hours.

When transporting people, it doesn’t act foolishly. It sits in the driver’s seat and… “does literally everything except drive.” It monitors the road, and when passengers are interested in technology, it demonstrates its functions to them. According to his account, they “react with enthusiasm and curiosity.” He estimates it relies on Tesla’s automation for “95 percent of the time.” But even the SF Chronicle notes that although the revolution is already underway, people are reluctant to admit it. The outlet doesn’t delve further into the topic; it could be due to male pride regarding “losing control” as well as legal frameworks that can’t keep up with progress.

FSD (Supervised) is a driver assistance system at Level 2+ (SAE Level 2+). It requires constant human presence and supervision. The European Union is currently working on bringing this solution to market.
