The long-term future of the Spanish automaker Seat remains undecided at present. According to CEO Markus Haupt, the further development of this Volkswagen subsidiary depends on future regulations, particularly regarding the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Although there are reports suggesting the brand might be discontinued by 2029 as part of a Volkswagen Group restructuring, Haupt emphasized in an interview with Autocar the brand’s strength due to increasing market share in certain regions. The current model lineup includes the compact car Ibiza, the small SUV Arona, as well as the Leon and Leon Sportstourer. The latter two are also available as plug-in hybrids.

For next year, the introduction of mild-hybrid engines for the Ibiza and Arona models is planned. According to Haupt, this serves as proof of ongoing investments in the brand. He said, “Seat is part of our strategy, and we continue to invest in Seat.”

The CEO admitted that a scenario of phasing out the brand exists, but emphasized that it is not the only option. Should a withdrawal occur, the brand would still guarantee service for its vehicles for 15 years.

According to the executive, regulatory requirements such as CO2 targets, along with geopolitical factors and customer behavior, are crucial for the future. Starting in 2030, implementation will become even more difficult due to stricter regulations. The final decision regarding the future of the Seat brand depends on the pace of electrification and the flexibility of regulatory frameworks.

The Seat CEO concluded by saying, “We are currently working on various scenarios, and I believe the exact timing will be determined by legal requirements and customer behavior.”

Even if the core brand ceases to exist, the Spanish subsidiary will play a central role in the parent company going forward. The sports-oriented sister brand Cupra is highly successful and continues to grow, especially with electric vehicles. Seat S.A. is also leading the industrialization of the MEB21 electric vehicle platform as well as the production of Volkswagen Group’s urban electric vehicle lineup in Martorell.
