Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its second all-electric vehicle of its own, following the AMG GT 4-door Coupé: the new AMG GT SUV, which shares the same platform as its sedan counterpart, the AMG.EA. It is also Mercedes-AMG’s first dedicated SUV, as it had previously only modified models from Mercedes-Benz such as the GLE or the G-Class.

The SUV measures 5084 mm in length, 2001 mm in width, and 1656 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3040 mm. Thus, it serves as a sports-oriented equivalent to the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and positions itself as a direct rival to the Porsche Cayenne Electric. As we will see later, the similarities to the Stuttgart-based model extend beyond just size and approach.

The boomerang-shaped optical groups feature a three-pointed star-shaped light signature, while the vertical slat grille and corporate logo can be illuminated. At the rear, we find a design similar to that of the AMG GT 4-door Coupé, with six round indicators embedded in a black frame. Depending on the version, it is equipped with an active spoiler that can adjust its position automatically.

The interior is very consistent with other models from the German manufacturer, featuring a 10.2-inch digital dashboard, a central 14-inch touchscreen, and an optional third 14-inch panel for the passenger. On the raised central console are wireless chargers for smartphones, along with three dials to control certain vehicle parameters. Levers behind the steering wheel allow adjustment of the level of regenerative braking retention. There are a total of five seats and two trunks: a 78-liter front trunk and a 607-liter rear trunk.

The range consists of three versions: 53, 55, and 63. The GT 53 model uses two permanent magnet synchronous motors (one per axle), delivering 544 horsepower (400 kW) of power and capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h. The battery has a net capacity of 106 kWh, allowing it to claim an WLTP range of 668 km. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, it can be charged at up to 600 kW in direct current, taking just 11 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge.

The GT 55 features three axial-flow engines (one on the front axle and two on the rear), the same configuration as the CLA 45 4MATIC+ and GT 4-door Coupé. In this case, the power output reaches 816 HP (600 kW), reducing the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time to 3.1 seconds and increasing the top speed to 270 km/h. There are two batteries: the previously mentioned one with a capacity of 106 kWh (585 km WLTP range, charging at 600 kW, 10-80% charge in 11 minutes), and another with a capacity of 128 kWh (700 km WLTP range, charging at 710 kW, 10-80% charge in 12 minutes).

The GT 63 delivers an impressive 1,169 HP (860 kW), with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. It is also available with batteries of 106 kWh (585 km WLTP, charging at 600 kW, 10-80% in 11 minutes) and 128 kWh (700 km WLTP, charging at 710 kW, 10-80% in 12 minutes).

We must mention the standard rear steering wheels, as well as the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, which is standard on the GT 63 and available as an option on the GT 55. It features three-stage pneumatic springs, an 8.2-liter pressure reservoir, and hydraulic interconnection between the shock absorbers. This system allows the vehicle’s height to be reduced, eliminating the need for stabilizer bars since active hydraulic components control roll and pitch movements.
