Switzerland: The electric vehicle market grew by 59 percent in October

6,620 electric vehicles were newly registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein in October. This represents a 58.6 percent increase compared to the previous month. It also corresponds to a BEV market share of 34.9 percent among all new car registrations that month.

According to the latest figures from the importers’ association auto-schweiz, new electric vehicle registrations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein rose significantly in October, from 4,175 to 6,620 vehicles. This represents a 58.6 percent increase over the previous month. As a result, the BEV share of all new car registrations increased from 22.6 percent to 34.9 percent.

This continues the strong upward trend from the past few months. Although the share of BEVs in October was slightly below September’s 35.7 percent, electric mobility remains at a high level. In August, the share of pure electric vehicles was still 30.2 percent.

The overall market in Switzerland and Liechtenstein also showed positive growth in October, though more slowly than the electric vehicle segment. A total of 18,986 new passenger cars were registered, 2.9 percent more than in October 2025. Since the beginning of the year, the total number of new registrations has reached 192,523 vehicles, representing a 2.7 percent increase compared to the first ten months of the previous year.

Let’s look at the mix of propulsion types: Electric vehicles were the strongest group in October, accounting for 34.9% of the market share. Following them are full and mild hybrids, which made up 32.9% of the market with 6,239 new registrations. Plug-in hybrids, including range-extender vehicles, accounted for 12.2% with 2,322 units. Pure gasoline vehicles still held a 15.5% market share (2,940 vehicles), while diesel cars made up only 4.6% with 865 new registrations.

Since the beginning of the year, 52,084 new electric vehicles have been registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. This represents a 30.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 39,900 BEVs were registered. The share of BEVs in total new car registrations rose from 21.3 percent to 27.1 percent so far this year. As a result, more than one in four newly registered cars are now fully electric.

The proportion of all plug-in vehicles—including plug-in hybrids and range-extender models—was 39.4 percent in the first ten months. This means that vehicles with external charging capabilities now account for a larger market share than fully and mild hybrids that cannot be charged externally, which together account for 35.8 percent.

The overall market remains behind the development in many other European countries. According to auto-schweiz, Switzerland’s passenger car market has grown by only 2.7 percent since the beginning of the year, while the European overall market managed to increase by 5.7 percent in the first nine months.
