Scania introduces new electric truck battery solution behind the cab

Scania is introducing a new battery solution that features battery packs mounted behind the cab. Named “Battery-Behind-Cab,” this option provides additional battery capacity and expands the possibilities for configuring electric trucks. It allows range, payload, vehicle geometry, and interior requirements to be tailored to various transportation tasks.
The placement behind the cab complements the battery packs on the chassis and under the cab. In a typical configuration, two MP20 battery packs are mounted behind the cab, providing approximately 356 kWh of additional installed battery capacity. This ensures that the installed battery capacity is not solely dependent on battery packs on the chassis.
Scania identifies high payloads, long distances, certain trailer combinations, and special loading requirements as distinct demands on the vehicle layout.

"There is no one-size-fits-all solution for electrification. For some transport companies, payload capacity is the top priority, while for others it’s flexibility in setup, trailer compatibility, charging strategy, or maximum range," says Lars Gustafsson, Senior Vice President and Head of Solutions Management at Scania. "The battery solution behind the cab offers Scania customers another way to tailor electric trucks to the actual demands of daily transportation, as battery capacity can be placed more flexibly within the vehicle."

The battery solution is compatible with selected 6×2-4 tractor units for long-haul transport. Together with the extended IVD front (Increased Vehicle Dimension), it enables a European 6×2-4 tractor unit configuration with additional battery capacity and an overall vehicle length of over 16.5 meters. According to Scania, this allows for higher battery capacity, trailer compatibility, and consistent maneuverability.
