The ID. ERA 5X is built on the CMP platform developed for the Chinese market and uses the CEA architecture co-developed with Xpeng.
Higher-trim versions come with LiDAR and offer driver-assistance functions for urban roads, highways and automated parking.
SAIC Volkswagen will launch the ID. ERA 5X on November 12, with the compact SUV becoming the first all-electric SUV in the ID. ERA series.
Both Yiche and Auto Home cited official information on Monday in disclosing the launch date. Pre-orders for the vehicle opened on September 15.
SAIC Volkswagen said the ID. ERA 5X would go on sale in November when it rolled out the extended-range ID. ERA 8X SUV on October 12. The latest information pins the launch date down to November 12.
The launch of the ID. ERA 8X brought the family's line-up on sale to 3 models, including the extended-range ID. ERA 9X and ID. ERA 8X SUVs as well as the plug-in hybrid ID. ERA 5S sedan. The 5X will add an all-electric powertrain option to that line-up.
The ID. ERA 5X is Volkswagen's first production model globally to be built on the CMP (China Main Platform) and to use the CEA (China Electronic Architecture) electronic and electrical architecture.
The CMP platform was developed specifically for the Chinese market, while the CEA was co-developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV). The new vehicle will advance Volkswagen's roll-out of localized technology for the Chinese market.
The ID. ERA 5X entered the vehicle filing catalog of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in August. Last month, the first production unit of the model rolled off the line at the factory.
The new vehicle has a 5-seat layout and measures 4,560 millimeters long, 1,896 millimeters wide and 1,630 millimeters tall, with a wheelbase of 2,815 millimeters. Its exterior carries over the simple, rugged design language of the ID. ERA family.
In terms of powertrain, the vehicle has a motor with peak power of 155 kW (208 hp). Earlier regulatory filings showed that it is equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries, with cells supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750).
The vehicle is offered with 45.8-kilowatt-hour and 58.5-kilowatt-hour battery packs, which provide all-electric ranges of 415 kilometers (258 miles) and 520 kilometers, respectively.
For driver assistance, higher-trim versions come with a 192-channel LiDAR and the Xingyun Zhixing driver-assistance system, covering scenarios including urban roads, highways and automated parking.
The cabin features a 4-nanometer MTK 8676 automotive-grade chip, a floating center control screen and a fully digital instrument cluster, along with a column-mounted electronic gear selector.
Volkswagen has begun real-world road testing and data collection for L3 technology in Hefei.
