To the west of Wałcz, one of the largest road projects in the country is currently underway. It’s not just a single bypass or a few dozen kilometers of expressway. Approximately 96 km of S10 is being built simultaneously between Stargard and Wałcz.
GDDKiA describes this section as the longest road construction site in Poland. Work is being carried out on several contracts at once, and once the final permits are obtained, contractors can proceed with construction along the entire route.
In addition, there is a 4.4-kilometer section from Szczecin Kijewo to Szczecin Zdunowo. In total, seven sections of S10 are being built between Szczecin and Wałcz, with a combined length of just over 100 km.
96 km of construction from Stargard to Wałcz
The longest of the individual contracts is 19.6 km and runs from Suchania to Recz. The others include Stargard – Suchań at 13.8 km, Recz – Cybowo at about 15.7 km, Cybowo – Łowicz Wałecki at 16.6 km, Łowicz Wałecki – Piecnik at 14.9 km, and a 16-kilometer section from Piecnik to Wałcz.
The first construction permits were issued in December 2025 for the Stargard – Suchań and Suchań – Recz sections. Additional projects began in the following months, with the final ZRID decision for the Łowicz Wałecki – Piecnik section issued on June 29, 2026.
Initially, work involved tree felling, engineering surveys, preparing infrastructure, and upgrading networks, including gas pipelines near the existing DK10. Now the scope of work is much larger. Embankments and excavations are being created, subbases made from aggregates are being constructed, and bridge structures are becoming increasingly visible.
The longest viaduct will be 382 meters long
The construction will be carried out using the incremental launching method. This means that successive sections of the structure are built at a special site and then gradually moved onto the prepared supports. The first segment is already under construction.
On the Cybowo – Łowicz Wałecki section, prefabricated elements for upper animal crossings have been installed. The scale of such work is substantial. Alone on the Recz – Cybowo section, 14 bridge structures will be built, including six viaducts, one bridge, and seven large animal crossings. Additionally, 47 passages for smaller animals and amphibians are planned there.
Construction is already affecting the existing DK10
The new S10 is being constructed in large part adjacent to the existing DK10. On one hand, this helps reduce the use of local roads by heavy construction equipment; on the other hand, it means increasing traffic management changes on the current route.
The biggest difficulties currently exist on the Szczecin Kijewo – Szczecin Zdunowo section, where a heavily congested part of DK10 is under reconstruction. Drivers also need to be cautious between Stargard and Suchanie. In several areas, traffic has been diverted onto temporary lanes to allow for the construction of new overpasses.
Further changes can be expected between Recz and Cybow, as well as in the areas of Mirosławiec, Piecnik, and the connection to the existing bypass around Wałcz. GDDKiA states that the temporary traffic organization will be changed multiple times as work progresses.
By 2028, S10 is set to connect Szczecin with Pila.
The sections currently under construction are part of a much larger project. The new S10 route from Szczecin to Piła is expected to be 113.4 km long in total. The entire project has been divided into eight contracts, with a combined value of around 4.4 billion złoty. The last section in the east is the 13-kilometer stretch from Wałcz to Piła.
The new route will connect the A6 highway near Szczecin with the S11 expressway near Piła. For drivers, this means that a large part of the current one-lane DK10 road will be replaced by an expressway with two lanes and collision-free interchanges. The schedule calls for completing all sections between Szczecin and Wałcz by the end of 2028.
The next two years will therefore be a period of the most intensive work. Along the route, which was until recently mainly a collection of sites prepared for construction, embankments, overpasses, and sections of the future road surface are becoming increasingly visible. If the schedule is maintained, drivers will have over 100 km of much-needed new S10 in West Pomerania by 2028.
