“While traveling between Italy and France, I noticed an incredible difference in charging costs despite using the same Ionity provider. Ionity service area Rinovo on Highway A8: power level 350 kW, price 0.87 euros/kWh. Ionity service area Breguieres on the northern part of Highway E80 in France: same power level of 350 kW, price 0.59 euros/kWh. It would be interesting to write an investigative article on this. Best regards,” Paolo Belletti

This is Italy, gentlemen: we pay more for everything

Answer. This is one of the reasons why electric car sales account for 38% in France while in Italy we’re still at 6%. It’s a vicious cycle here, as fewer charging stations are used the higher the prices become. Additionally, the cost of energy plays a role, since prices across the border are lower thanks to nuclear power. We’re a country burdened by abnormally high electricity costs, largely due to our heavy reliance on imports. This is a cost borne especially by businesses. At French prices (0.59 kWh for the most powerful Ionity chargers), electric cars are much more cost-effective than gasoline and diesel. This is also confirmed by the monthly reports prepared by Adiconsum and TariffEV. In Italy, this same advantage exists, as a 50 kW charge at Ionity costs 14 euros.

It’s even more so than in France. And the music remains unchanged, even on Italian-owned networks (such as Eni’s Plenitude) present in the rest of Europe.
