Rheinmetall unveiled a new version of the loading ramp. This time it’s an island.

Rheinmetall specializes not only in tanks and armored vehicles but also in Type 2 docking stations that allow cars to connect to them. The company has just introduced another version of its solution: a metal island suitable for installation in larger parking lots where docking stations would either be in the way or too difficult to access. The island is designed to have enhanced load resistance and enable faster recharging.
Rheinmetall, Good Engineering for a Good Cause
The island is mounted directly on the parking surface, with the RFID connector and Type 2 socket accessible from above. The complete power module can also be reached from the top, ensuring that replacement is efficient and quick in case of a failure. The device handles up to 22 kW (AC power), and its metal cover can withstand the weight of a delivery truck, light truck, or other vehicles commonly used in fleets, so there is no need to protect it with additional posts.

The island was designed for companies and locations with large parking lots where cars spend several hours. For small parking spaces or street-side parking areas, the Rheinmetall curb is a better solution. It is available in concrete or metal versions (image below), with optional painting. The photo is not very clear, so it’s worth noting that all devices fully comply with German regulations; therefore, in addition to LEDs indicating operating mode, they also have a meter for the energy consumed (a small blue-gray rectangle on a white background):

Although Rheinmetall’s solutions seem susceptible to weather conditions, over a year of testing in Cologne, Germany, demonstrated that the equipment maintains reliability at over 99 percent regardless of weather. The charging stations were shut down only once, when a lack of precipitation caused old leaves and dust to accumulate. The equipment received exceptionally high ratings from long-time electric vehicle users, with plugging the charger into an adjacent socket being considered the most intuitive solution for them.
