Renault 5 vs Geely E2: Which to buy in 2026

Renault 5 vs Geely E2: Which to buy in 2026

Until a few years ago, no more than 5 or 6, European brands didn’t need to worry about Chinese brands, but everything changed after the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, China dominates all attention in the industry. Its brands are expanding abroad with products that can compete with the most popular European, Japanese, Korean, or American brands. A good example of this is the comparison we present to you today—a head-to-head between the Renault 5 and the Geely E2.

Renault 5 vs Geely E2 00

The Renault 5 has been a game-changer for the European electric vehicle market. Its retro design and excellent value for money have been more than enough to fill the Old Continent with French small electric cars. Its success now faces competition from the Geely E2, China’s best-selling electric vehicle. It has been available in Spain for several weeks now, offering attractive prices, a decent interior space, and very balanced performance.

Comparison table: Renault 5 vs Geely E2

Size is an important factor. Although brands have started with the bigger picture, the entry-level segments (A and B) are crucial for the growth of electric mobility. The Renault 5 and Geely E2 compete in the same urban category, though there are slight yet noticeable differences when comparing them side by side. As you’ll see, these differences become more significant when it comes to interior space.

Current price and range in Spain

The financial aspect always poses a challenge when buying an electric car. Prices are gradually decreasing. Smaller models like the E2 and Renault 5 make electric mobility accessible to more drivers. In this comparison, either of these models can be purchased for less than 25,000 euros, without discounts or subsidies, although in both cases the prices rise above 27,000 euros for the more equipped and long-range versions.

These rates, for September 2026, may change due to the brand’s occasional offers or government subsidies. Both models are eligible for the new public subsidy package promoted by authorities, Plan Auto+, though the amounts differ. For the Renault 5, a maximum discount of up to 4,500 euros in direct subsidies is available, along with other tax benefits such as a 15% reduction on income tax for the following year. The Geely E2, however, is not eligible because it is manufactured outside the European Union. Geely hopes to resolve this issue by the end of 2027, when the E2 goes into production at Ford’s factory in Almussafes.

Charging times and capacities at home and on the road

Renault 5 vs Geely E2 02

Although both vehicles in this comparison are marketed as the best solutions for urban mobility, they also meet certain requirements for use on longer distances. To go beyond city limits, one needs a charging system fast enough to avoid ruining the driving experience. These are by no means long-range cars. They are ideal for short to medium-distance trips. They are perfect for city use, allowing us to complete our usual weekly commutes with just one charge.

The Renault 5 offers a DC charging power of between 80 and 100 kW, depending on the type of battery installed. The French manufacturer claims its car can charge from 10% to 80% of the battery in about 30 minutes, provided ideal conditions are met. At home, using a 11 kW outlet (a reinforced outlet), it’s possible to restore 100% of the range in 4.5 hours. The Geely E2 is slightly slower in this process. Its maximum DC charging power is 80 kW. The brand states a charging time of 25 minutes to go from 30% to 80%. It has an advantage in terms of a fairly stable charging curve. On AC, it reaches a maximum power of 6.6 kW, taking up to 7.1 hours to charge from 25% to 100% of the range.

Range and Real-World Consumption

Renault 5 vs Geely E2 03

Charging power is an important factor, but real-world fuel consumption and range are even more crucial. With extensive experience in electrification, both brands offer balanced fuel consumption figures. Based on these data points, the Renault 5 emerges as a clear winner in this comparison, although there are significant differences between theoretical and actual fuel consumption. From our experience, the natural fuel consumption of the Renault 5 is around 17 kWh per 100 kilometers, though it depends heavily on the driving distance and style. During our tests, the actual range was approximately 300 to 320 kilometers.

Theoretically, the Geely E2 should consume more and have less range than the Renault 5, yet tests show that its actual fuel consumption is closer to the theoretical values. After driving hundreds of kilometers with this car, we can report an average consumption of around 15.5 kWh per 100 kilometers. In urban driving conditions, it’s even possible to reduce this figure to around 12 kWh per 100 kilometers if we drive carefully. With this in mind, the actual range of the E2 is practically the same as that of the Renault 5—around 300 kilometers. Its lower weight is a significant advantage in this regard.

Space, trunk, and comfort

Renault 5 vs Geely E2 05

As we’ve mentioned earlier, the Geely E2 and the Renault 5 are only a few centimeters apart, though they can still be considered rivals. The difference in exterior dimensions is most noticeable inside the vehicle, where a clear winner emerges. The Renault 5 is excessively narrow and cramped in its rear seating area. In contrast, the Geely E2 offers a spacious interior typical of higher-class vehicles. The second row of seats is fully suitable for adult passengers up to 1.85 meters tall. In terms of cargo capacity as well, the Geely E2 has a clear advantage, with a much larger trunk. It also features a very spacious front cargo area, something the Renault 5 cannot offer.

Driving, comfort, and noise

Gradually, Chinese manufacturers have learned to produce cars that can compete with European models in terms of driving performance and dynamics. The Renault 5 is a clear benchmark in its class. Its chassis and setup offer a very pleasant and even enjoyable driving experience. It handles like a fish in water both in urban areas and on the road. Its rival, the Geely E2, cannot match its capabilities or dynamic feel, but it still drives well. It has softer suspensions, offering more comfort, yet less agility. At low to medium speeds, it is quite refined, slightly better than the French model, though it performs better as the speed increases.

Which one suits you based on your profile

Renault 5 vs Geely E2 04

Choose the Renault 5 if you don’t want to fall back on a Chinese company, even though Geely and Renault are international partners. It’s one of the most fun electric cars you can drive, and its design is a strong selling point. It’s a car defined by its appearance, though it has more merits as well. Its fuel consumption and range are within reasonable limits. Its equipment and quality are generous, although it has a serious issue with interior space. Its rear seats are so narrow that its practicality and versatility are severely compromised.

Choose the Geely E2 if you want a more comprehensive car. It’s larger and much more spacious. Its rear seat row allows you to carry adult passengers. The trunk is more functional. It’s a more complete car overall. Its design, while not bad, isn’t nearly as appealing as that of the French model. Its price is competitive, and its range and fuel efficiency figures are excellent. It’s not the most exciting car in the world, but it’s an excellent choice for those looking for a cost-effective electric vehicle.

Alternatives to consider

Gradually, the segment of urban and/or compact electric cars is becoming more diverse with various options and alternatives. Many brands are competing in this category. Besides the Renault 5 and Geely E2, there are other alternatives worth considering. Some of these include the CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo, Skoda Epiq, BYD Dolphin Surf, Opel Corsa Electric, Nissan Micra, and Dongfeng Box, among others. All of them compete with one another in terms of size, price, and/or range. The Renault 5 stands out for its design, while the Geely E2 excels due to its well-balanced features.
