Renault has refreshed the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric. The car will be available with the existing batteries of ~55 (52) kWh and ~43 (40) kWh, but these now offer slightly improved ranges of 410 -> 430 and 312 -> 315 WLTP units respectively. Meanwhile, the base Five version with a pack based on LFP cells is now available for sale, featuring a capacity of ~38 (36.5) kWh and a range of up to 305 WLTP units. It will soon discontinue the Urban Range version with a ~43 (40) kWh battery.

Renault claims that improved range is due to a lowered body and “new rear mirrors” (source), though it likely refers to the covers of the exterior mirrors. Compared to the older version, they are slightly less rounded in the middle and sharply tapered at the ends. Interestingly, all these optimizations have only a minimal impact on the Urban Range version (+1% range), while they add a considerable amount (+4.9%) to the Comfort Range version with a larger battery.

The current base version of the Five with a battery of ~43 (40) kWh and an engine producing 70 kW/95 HP will be replaced by the aforementioned edition featuring a LFP battery using cell-to-pack technology and a more powerful engine of 80 kW/110 HP. The engine is said to come from the “Twingo family,” suggesting that the Renault Twingo E-Tech might also receive this same powertrain in the future. The smaller electric model currently uses a battery with a capacity of ~29 (27.5) kWh and an engine producing 60 kW/80 HP, which is a somewhat low specification even for such a compact vehicle, unless one has access to an outlet and no issue charging when needed.

Let’s return to the Renault 5 E-Tech. In addition to AC charging capability, even the base Five version will come equipped with a fast charging port that allows for speeds up to 80 kW. As part of the optional equipment upgrades from Five to Iconic Cinq, a bright red paint color (Flame Red) will be available, while options from Evolution to Roland-Garros will offer Metallic Schist Grey. Red (below) or grey decorative strips will also be available, and the interior roof lining will get a Starry Black option — though these stars are not visible in the press photos (Illustration No. 3). The Iconic version’s finishes will be blue instead of yellow-gold.

A magnetic, cooled inductive phone charger will appear in the cockpit (to the left of the dashboard in the image below). The Smart driving mode is designed to recognize the driver’s style and automatically switch between settings (Eco, Comfort, Sport), which is why the button for controlling it has been removed from the steering wheel. If someone wants to decide on the driving mode manually, they can issue a corresponding voice command or find the option on the touchscreen. For three years after purchase, the driver will have access to 2 GB of free data per month, which is renewed automatically.

The prices of the facelifted Renault 5 E-Tech have not been announced. Currently, the car has seen a slight price drop in many western markets, but it can be assumed that prices will rise slightly with the launch of the updated version. The biggest mystery remains the price of the Renault 5 E-Tech with an LFP battery, as it should be cheaper than the ~43 (40) kWh version.
