Production of the Polestar 2 has officially ended, according to reports. The Swedish-Chinese electric car manufacturer confirmed to British news agency PA Media, among others, that manufacturing of this electric mid-size sedan has been halted. According to Autocar, the last units rolled off the assembly line at the Luqiao plant in China, where the model has been produced since 2020. A completely new successor is set to launch in early 2027.
The Polestar 2 was the first fully electric mass-produced model from the brand owned by the Chinese Geely Group, serving as the foundation for its international business for several years. According to the manufacturer, over 190,000 units were sold worldwide by February 2026. Autocar estimates that around 200,000 vehicles were sold throughout the model’s lifecycle, while other industry outlets report more than 200,000 units produced.
Technically, the Polestar 2 is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) shared with its parent company’s Volvo brand, which is also designed for vehicles with internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. During its production period, the model series underwent several technical upgrades as well as design modifications.
Recently, Polestar offered in Germany rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions with power outputs of up to 350 kW or 476 horsepower (0-100 km/h in up to 4.3 seconds, top speed of 205 km/h), as well as a range-optimized Long-Range version with a WLTP range of up to 659 kilometers. The Long-Range models feature a battery with an 82 kWh capacity and achieve a maximum DC charging speed of 205 kW according to the manufacturer. Under optimal conditions, the charging process from 10% to 80% is said to take 28 minutes.
The end of production does not mean an immediate halt in sales. In Norway and Sweden, Polestar had already stopped accepting new factory orders earlier and directed interested customers to available inventory vehicles. In the UK, the current Polestar 2 is set to be sold until 2027 according to the manufacturer. The model is also still listed on the German Polestar website at an introductory price of 57,690 euros. However, the actual availability of specific versions depends on the remaining vehicle inventory and ordering options.
The second generation of the Polestar 2 is set to be introduced early next year and is a complete new design according to the manufacturer. According to Autocar, the new model will be slightly longer than the current electric car, which measures around 4.61 meters, and will feature an improved design language. Autocar also reports that production is still planned in China, though there is no official confirmation of the manufacturing location. The new Polestar 2 is expected to shift from the current CMA platform to Volvo’s new SPA3 platform.
Currently, Polestar offers several electric vehicles. The best-selling model is the SUV coupe Polestar 4, which now comes with an additional SUV variant. In addition, there is already the large SUV Polestar 3 as well as the sports sedan Polestar 5. The introduction of the Polestar 7 as an SUV counterpart to the new Polestar 2 is planned for 2028. In the long term, the sports car Polestar 6 is also set to be offered.
