The price is half a million lower than the fossil edition.

The price is half a million lower than the fossil edition.

A couple of years ahead of schedule, it’s here. The Range Rover Electric offers excellent range and is considerably cheaper—or should we say less expensive—than today’s models.

The Range Rover Electric is now available for ordering in Norway. The announcement was made at the top of Aker Brygge’s Lingling restaurant in Oslo, where the vehicle was unveiled for the first time.

For safety reasons, it was done on the same day as the boat show “Boats in the Sea” started. So it was a fitting place to introduce this luxury car.

Range Rover – All Electric

The car is essentially the same as the Range Rover launched back in 2021.

In 2024, we were promised an electric version was on the way—and it already looks fully finished, but only now is it possible to order one.

Externally, the changes include a smoother grille, unique wheels with “EV” on the center cap, charging ports on each side... and that’s about it.

The interior is the same. There are a few unique controls for the electric drive, otherwise the car is exactly as it was before. And that was also the goal.

“It’s still primarily a Range Rover, but it runs on electricity,” says the Norwegian chief Henrik Schanche. No, he is not related to the rally driver Schanche.

The Strongest in Its Class

Range Rover hasn’t been tempted to use four engines or gimmicks like a tank turret, etc.

The Range Rover Electric is equipped with two electric motors, each delivering 260 kW of power. The combined output reaches up to 550 horsepower, with a torque of 850 Nm. This makes it the most powerful Range Rover in terms of torque ever produced.

According to WLTP measurements, the range is up to 600 kilometers. The manufacturer also states an expected practical range of up to 535 kilometers.

The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, while the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h is completed in 2.7 seconds.

To achieve similar performance levels in a fossil fuel version, one would need to spend 500,000 kroner on the mild hybrid version.

The drive train uses permanent magnet motors with semiconductors made of silicon carbide.

JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) states that these motors deliver 20 percent more torque than other engines of similar size, while the technology is designed to ensure high efficiency.

800-volt technology

The power comes from a newly developed lithium-ion battery with 118.5 kWt capacity. The battery consists of 344 prismatic cells in a dual-stack configuration intended to provide high energy density.

The Range Rover Electric uses an 800-volt architecture and supports so-called split charging, allowing it to charge each half of the battery simultaneously.

The maximum charging speed is 350 kW. This is far below what Xpeng, Denza, and upcoming BYD models can achieve, but it remains fast nonetheless.

With superchargers having a capacity of over 325 kW, it takes about 22 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent. In ten minutes, the car can gain enough energy for up to 220 kilometers of WLTP range under optimal conditions.

Practical?

This is primarily a luxury car. The rear seats are split and adjustable, but the space isn’t extremely generous.

The car on display is a so-called Autobiography version, meaning it comes with luxurious seats. It can also be ordered with a three-seater bench, which is the most popular option in Norway, as well as with a longer wheelbase.

The trunk capacity is only 525 liters, and with our seat configuration, it’s not possible to lower the seat backs as far. With the seats folded down, the maximum volume reaches a moderate 1150 liters.

But unlike the electric Mercedes G 580, the Range Rover still has tow hooks that can handle 2.5 tons. The roof load limit is 100 kilograms.

Land Rover has had a series of buttons in the trunk for several years to lower the floor for easier loading, fold down the seats, and even include a practical feature like a trailer light test.

Pressing this button allows you to go behind the trailer, after which the car runs a test cycle with all the lights on the trailer activated.

Preserves off-road capabilities

Range Rover claims that electrification has not come at the expense of off-road capabilities; on the contrary.

A new version of Integrated Traction Management adjusts engine torque within 50 milliseconds.

According to JLR, this is up to 100 times faster than similar systems in gasoline-powered vehicles, offering significant advantages in rough terrain.

The system works together with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, which can continuously distribute torque to the rear wheels to ensure optimal grip.

The model retains a ground clearance of 900 millimeters and is capable of navigating slopes up to 45 degrees.

Single Pedal Driving Also Off the Asphalt

Range Rover Electric features a new Single Pedal mode with three regeneration levels: Coast, Light, and Heavy.

In its most powerful mode, the vehicle can regenerate up to 0.5 g of braking energy while simultaneously charging the battery. The system is also designed to provide better control in sharp curves and challenging terrains, allowing the vehicle to remain stable without using the brake pedal.

A lower center of gravity compared to fossil fuel versions, along with a dual-chamber air suspension, will contribute to improved driving dynamics and stability both on roads and off-road.

Extensive testing program

JLR states that the Range Rover Electric has undergone over 1.5 million kilometers of testing and more than 250,000 hours of physical and virtual development work.

This exceeds the testing distance achieved by any previous Range Rover model, which may also explain the long wait time and various delays.

The testing has taken place in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees in Sweden’s Arjeplog to extreme heat in Dubai, as well as at JLR’s own test facilities in the UK.

The model utilizes the new ThermAssist technology, which optimizes battery temperature control. According to the manufacturer, this system can extend range by up to 40 kilometers and reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent under demanding conditions.

The Range Rover Electric also features a digital battery monitoring system with over 900 diagnostic data points. Along with wireless software updates, this is intended to facilitate easier maintenance and better tracking throughout the vehicle’s lifetime.

The warranty is eight years or 160,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

Manufactured in the UK

Production takes place in Solihull, where JLR has made significant investments in electrification. Approximately 9,000 employees at the factory have received training related to electric vehicles.

Battery packs and electric powertrains are produced at the group’s electrification center in Wolverhampton.

The upgrade of production lines has included 13 new production lines, nine kilometers of conveyor belts, and 182 kilometers of power and data cables.

Connected via a new app

A new Range Rover app provides access to information such as charging status, estimated range, real-time location, and whether the vehicle is locked or unlocked.

Through the app, owners can also schedule charging at home or at work to take advantage of the most favorable electricity prices. Other features include control over the heated seats and the vehicle’s air quality system.

In Europe, owners have access to over one million public charging points through the charging services supported by the vehicle.

Price and models

The Range Rover Electric is available with both short and long wheelbase options, depending on the market. It comes in SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra, and SV Black trims.

A special First Edition version is released in Belgravia Green, featuring an interior made of Light Cloud Ultrafabrics PU and so-called square materials, meaning leather-free alternatives.

In Norway, the price starts at 1,955,900 kroner, including shipping and delivery, for the Range Rover Electric EV450 SE. The First Edition version, which is an Autobiography model with additional features, costs just over 2.5 million kroner.
