According to a report by the online car platform Autoscout24, average listing prices on Germany’s used car market slightly declined in October. As reported by Autohaus.de, prices dropped by 0.6 percent compared to September, reaching an average of 26,728 euros.
The exception is the electric vehicle sector: The price of used battery electric vehicles rose by 1.7 percent in October to an average of 39,658 euros. Since January, the average selling price for these vehicles has increased by about 20 percent, from around 32,980 euros at the start of the year. Meanwhile, the supply of electric vehicles decreased by 7.2 percent in October.
Price declines are evident in almost all vehicle segments. In the upper mid-range segment, prices fell by 2.7 percent to 29,578 euros, while in the mid-range segment they dropped by 1.4 percent to 24,777 euros. SUVs and off-road vehicles saw prices fall by 1 percent to 31,893 euros. Compact models were offered at an average price of 19,312 euros, a decrease of 0.6 percent, while small cars saw prices drop by 0.4 percent to 12,758 euros.
"When it comes to used electric cars, it's worth taking a closer look these days," explains Stefan Schneck, Head of Sales for Germany at Autoscout24. "For a long time, high value losses and falling prices were the main focus of discussions. Our current data show a more nuanced picture. Electric cars have been developing differently in terms of listing prices over the past months compared to the rest of the used car market."
Demand for used cars cooled down in October, dropping by 10.9 percent across all segments compared to the previous month. Interest in vans and minivans declined particularly sharply, falling by 12.9 percent. In the upper class, upper mid-class, and compact car segments, demand decreased by 11.9 percent, 11.7 percent, and 11.6 percent respectively. Interest in vehicles aged one to three years fell by 11.5 percent, while demand for models three to five years old dropped by 12.6 percent.
Among engine types, diesel, hybrid, and gasoline engines all saw price reductions. Diesel cars cost an average of 26,788 euros, 0.8 percent less than in September. Hybrid cars dropped by 0.7 percent to 37,164 euros, and gasoline cars fell by 0.2 percent to 23,893 euros. Demand for electric cars declined by 12.9 percent in October compared to the strong performance in September.
The number of listed vehicles decreased in October for electric cars as well as for other vehicle types. While the inventory of pure electric cars dropped by 7.2 percent, it fell by 3.7 percent for hybrids, 2.7 percent for gasoline cars, and 1.3 percent for diesel cars.
