Porsche reportedly plans to discontinue Taycan by 2030

The Porsche Taycan entered series production in 2019, but sales have fallen sharply after initially strong demand. According to a German business newspaper, Porsche now plans to discontinue the electric sports car by 2030 at the latest. A previously considered move from Stuttgart to Leipzig is reportedly no longer under discussion.

According to a report by WirtschaftsWoche, Porsche plans to discontinue the battery-electric Taycan within the next four years. The publication cites company insiders. Porsche’s management has also discussed moving Taycan production to Leipzig, as we reported at the end of 2024, as well as ending production of the electric sports car sooner. However, Porsche now appears to have decided to keep the Taycan in production until 2029 or 2030, which would give the model a production run of around a decade.

According to WirtschaftsWoche, Porsche decided due to significant underutilisation of Taycan production at its Stuttgart headquarters and weakening demand. Sales have reportedly fallen by around two-thirds compared with 2023. Porsche delivered nearly 41,000 Taycan vehicles in 2023, but only around 16,000 units last year. The downward trend has continued, with just over 6,000 Taycan deliveries in the first half of 2026.

“In recent months, production has been repeatedly halted due to weak demand,” WirtschaftsWoche reports. Porsche is no longer considering moving Taycan production away from Stuttgart. The carmaker has also reached an agreement with the works council to discontinue the model by 2030, although the agreement has yet to be put in writing.

Porsche has not officially confirmed the plans. However, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in late July that the company had no plans to discontinue the Taycan immediately and would continue to monitor demand closely. Porsche also recently updated the Taycan for the 2027 model year, which may factor into that decision. For the new model year, the electric sports car is also available with an optional virtual gearbox that simulates gear changes with noticeable jolts. The feature costs around €1,000.

According to Porsche, the model range and prices remain unchanged for the new model year. The Taycan continues to be available as a sports saloon, Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo, with 18 variants offering outputs ranging from 300 to 760 kW. Prices range from €102,600 to €241,100.
