Polestar 4 SUV variant announced, starting from €57,900

Polestar 4 SUV variant announced, starting from €57,900

The Swedish-Chinese EV manufacturer has unveiled the Polestar 4 SUV. Unlike the Polestar 3, the new body variant of the 4 retains the 400-volt platform, like the coupe. In Germany, the SUV can now be ordered starting at €57,900. The first deliveries are planned for the fourth quarter.

In February, Polestar announced plans to significantly expand its model range with four new models within three years. In addition to the now-launched Polestar 5, the manufacturer unveiled a new generation of the Polestar 2 for 2027 and the Polestar 7 for 2028 earlier this year.

Another variant of the Polestar 4 was also announced for the end of 2026, though without providing further details. This summer, the existing model first received an update and has since officially been designated the Polestar 4 Coupé. It is now clear that the new variant is the Polestar 4 SUV.

However, the new model is not a ‘raised’ coupé – the ground clearance remains identical at 166 millimetres. The differences only begin behind the B-pillar. The roofline extends more linearly towards the rear. Additionally, there is a roof rail and a significantly steeper rear section with a vertically positioned tailgate. The SUV also features a conventional rear window. In the Coupé, Polestar had omitted this, relying exclusively on a camera and a digital rear-view mirror for rear visibility.

Dimensions tweaked – and much more practical

With the modified roof and rear design, the dimensions barely change, but the practicality improves significantly. The Polestar 4 SUV is 4.84 metres long, just over 2.14 m wide (including mirrors), and has a wheelbase of almost three metres – all identical to the Coupé. The only difference in size is the height: at 1.556 m, the SUV is 22 mm taller than the 1.534 m Coupé. This primarily benefits rear passengers, who gain 25 mm of additional headroom.

Behind the rear seats, the Polestar 4 SUV offers 530 litres of boot space up to the top of the seat backs – just four litres more than the Coupé. The real gain comes in height: when loaded to the roof, the SUV provides 655 litres. With the 60:40 split rear seats folded down, capacity increases to up to 1,665 litres (compared to 1,536 litres in the Coupé). Both variants also include a 15-litre frunk. Unlike the Coupé, the SUV features a roof rail capable of supporting up to 100 kg. There is no difference in towing capacity compared to the Coupé: the Rear Motor can tow up to 1,500 kilograms, while the Dual Motor can tow up to 2,000 kilograms.

400-volt architecture – just like the Coupé

Both body variants use the Geely Group’s SEA platform with a 400-volt architecture. The Polestar 3, on the other hand, is based on the SPA2 platform and now features an 800-volt architecture. Like the Coupé, the SUV is also available with two drivetrain options. In the Rear Motor version, the electric motor on the rear axle delivers 200 kW and 343 Nm of torque. In the Dual Motor version, two electric motors combine for a system output of 400 kW and 686 Nm of torque. The top speed is 200 km/h.

Both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants are powered by a battery with a gross energy content of 100 kWh. Despite the taller body and slight additional weight of 35 kg (Rear Motor) or 20 kg (Dual Motor), the WLTP range of the Polestar 4 SUV is marginally better. The Rear Motor achieves up to 630 km – 10 km more than the Coupé. For the Dual Motor, the range is 600 km instead of 590 km. With the Performance Package, the difference is even greater: the SUV achieves 520 km compared to the Coupé’s 500 km.

The SUV also adopts the Coupé’s charging technology. At DC charging stations, up to 200 kW is possible. Polestar states that charging from 10 per cent to 80 per cent takes around 30 minutes. On the AC side, 11 kW is standard, meaning a full charge takes eleven hours. The 22 kW charger, which costs an additional €800 or is available as part of the €5,900 Prime Package (which also includes Pilot Assist, a head-up display, an electric tailgate, and three-zone automatic climate control), is significantly faster.

New for the entire model series is Vehicle-to-Load. Using a separately available adapter, external devices can be powered with up to 3.3 kW of single-phase power until a previously set minimum charge level is reached via the central display. The adapter is currently only approved for the German market. Additionally, Polestar is introducing a Camping Mode, which allows climate control, entertainment, and ambient lighting to continue functioning during extended stationary periods. Both functions will also be added to the Polestar 4 Coupé via a software update. The voice assistant Google Assistant is also being gradually replaced by Google Gemini. However, it is unclear from the announcement whether this applies only to the new model year of the Polestar 4 or also to older model years.

€2,000 cheaper than the Coupé

The panoramic glass roof is new for the SUV and larger than in the Coupé: the continuous glass surface extends to the tailgate and comes as standard equipment. Exclusively for the SUV, an electrochromic version is optionally available, allowing its light transparency to be adjusted via the central display. Due to the presence of a rear window, the SUV also includes a conventional rear-view mirror, while the camera-based digital rear-view mirror remains available as an option.

In Germany, the Polestar 4 SUV can be ordered immediately. The Rear Motor starts at €57,900, making it €2,000 cheaper than the Coupé, whose list price of €61,900 Polestar has currently reduced. The Dual Motor costs at least €65,900. Here, too, the difference to the currently discounted Coupé is €2,000.

The Polestar 4 SUV is already being produced in Busan, South Korea, with manufacturing having commenced in the second quarter. Even though the model can already be ordered, it will take some time before the first units reach customers. While the first deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, the configurator indicates a delivery window of January to February 2027 for the German market.
