No need to plug in your electric car anymore: wireless charging is coming to parking lots

It might soon no longer be necessary to pull out a cable to charge an electric vehicle. Electreon has unveiled Lite DOT, a new induction charging solution capable of delivering up to 11 kW of power. Installed directly in a parking space, this device can be used in garages, corporate parking lots, or warehouses without requiring major modifications. But there’s one condition!

Electreon is best known for its experiments with roads that can charge electric vehicles while they are in motion. The Israeli company is now exploring a much more conventional approach, namely parking spaces. Presented at the IAA Transportation in Hanover, its new Lite DOT aims to simplify daily charging.

Up to 11 kW without plugging in the car

The principle is induction charging. A module installed on the ground transfers energy to a receiver placed under the vehicle. Once a compatible car is properly positioned, it is detected and charging starts automatically. The power can reach 11 kW, equivalent to that of a conventional three-phase Wallbox.

Electreon claims 90% efficiency under certain conditions. Energy loss is therefore higher than with conventional wired charging, but the advantage is clear: the driver doesn’t need to do anything. Charging can occur automatically during the night or a workday.

No need to dig in the parking lot

Unlike some inductive systems built into the road surface, this device is simply placed above the ground. Electreon claims that this eliminates the need for digging trenches or extensive civil engineering work. However, an electrical enclosure must be mounted on a wall or pole and connected to a three-phase power supply.

The equipment is designed to function both in garages and outdoors, in rain or snow, within a temperature range of -30 to 50 °C. Vehicle fleets are among the first targets. Vehicles that return to the same locations every day can recharge while parked.

Another obstacle on the vehicle side

There is still a significant limitation, however. Not every electric vehicle will be able to use this charging station. In fact, a compatible receiver must be installed under the vehicle, provided by Electreon or integrated with the help of an automotive equipment supplier. No partner manufacturer for mass production has been announced yet.

We will also have to wait before seeing the Lite DOT appear in parking lots in France... The Israeli company states that the product has just been introduced and is not yet available for sale. Its release date will be announced later. But the device is promising!
