Peugeot prepares its response to the Renault 5 Turbo 3E: the 205 Turbo 16 is back

According to the French media outlet L'Argus, Peugeot will bring a prototype inspired by the legendary 205 Turbo 16 to the upcoming Paris Motor Show. The 205 Turbo 16 was a mid-engine powerhouse that many consider the rival to the Renault 5 Turbo. Since Renault is reviving the iconic “fat rear” design with the new R5 Turbo 3E, it’s possible Peugeot will make a similar move.

Peugeot has just registered the name E-T16, indicating that it will be an electric vehicle, just like the Turbo 3E. However, while Renault’s model will go into production (with a limited run of 1,980 units planned), it’s likely the E-T16 will remain merely a concept car, serving as a preview of the next generation of the 208.

Peugeot has made several references to the number 16 on its social media, which, along with confirmation that it will attend the show with two prototypes (one of which is likely the Polygon Concept), strengthens the theory that the E-T16 will be present at this Parisian event. Since the R5 Turbo 3E is about to begin deliveries, it will be the perfect opportunity to see both models up close.

A few days ago, we confirmed that Stellantis’ plant in Figueruelas (Zaragoza) will start pilot production of the new 208 in the coming weeks. The third generation of this utility vehicle will be 100% electric, though it is expected to coexist with its gasoline-powered predecessor (which will receive a minor aesthetic update) for an undetermined period of time.

The new Peugeot 208 will arrive in 2027

The new Peugeot E-208 will be based on the STLA One platform and will feature advancements such as a by-wire steering system (meaning no mechanical connection). It will be a direct competitor to the Renault 5 E-Tech; in addition, it will come with a high-performance GTi version designed to compete with the Alpine A290. However, as mentioned earlier, it is unlikely that a hypothetical E-T16 variant will make it to production.

The first two generations of the 208 inherited certain features from the 205; however, its third iteration will go much further, as its design is expected to be a clear futuristic homage to the legendary ‘sacré numéro’. Elements such as the three-leaf grille (now transformed into part of the front headlights’ lighting signature), the decorative trim on the C-pillar, and the square-shaped indicators will be present in the new E-208.

Initially, the vehicle will use LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) batteries from CATL. Its maximum range is expected to be around 500 km WLTP, putting it at the top of its class. Stellantis aims to turn it into an aspirational model, as within the B segment, the Citroën ë-C3 and FIAT Grande Panda will compete with Chinese models offering more competitive prices.
