Peugeot GTi: Electric car possible alongside hybrid, but no SUV

Peugeot unveiled the new E-208 GTi this summer. The all-electric compact car delivers the highest performance in its class, CEO Alain Fevey said in an interview with Auto Express. It far exceeds the 94 kW/128 hp of the traditional 205 GTi as well. The electric vehicle also boasts the best power-to-weight ratio in its segment.
The E-208 GTi, which costs 44,900 euros in this country, features an electric motor with 207 kW/281 hp and delivers 345 Nm of torque. The components of its electronic circuit board and control software come directly from motorsport. With a power-to-weight ratio of 5.5 kg/hp, the E-208 GTi accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. The battery management system has been adjusted to ensure consistent power delivery to the GTi engine.
The suspension has been improved. The chassis is lowered by 25 millimeters, and the track width was increased by 56 millimeters at the front and 28 millimeters at the rear. It also features 18-inch wheels with 215/40 R18 tires. An additional 31-millimeter stabilizer at the rear, a mechanical locking differential, and special springs with hydraulic shock absorbers are also part of the tuning.
Peugeot cites 355-millimeter brake discs with fixed 4-piston calipers at the front as the reason for the delay, designed specifically for optimal cooling and consistent braking performance. The rear features the standard brakes from the E-208. According to the specifications, the ESP is configured for everyday safety and includes a sport mode that provides more flexibility, especially on racetracks. In this mode, the regenerative braking function is disabled so the driver can focus on performance.
Favey states that sales figures for the E-208 GTi, which also emphasizes sportiness in its exterior and interior design, are limited. The goal of the GTi models is not to achieve maximum production volumes but to enhance the brand’s appeal. This sporty flagship model is intended to boost sales of other models such as the 2008 or 3008.
The new electric car is currently the only GTi model available from Peugeot. Favey was clear about the future direction of the sports sub-brand. Another model will only be introduced if it truly qualifies as a GTi. While a hybrid powertrain is conceivable, the product must convince the market with its performance. Expanding the GTi brand to the SUV segment is ruled out; the name represents a “hot hatch” (compact sports car), not a “hot SUV.” Even though other manufacturers might choose this path, Peugeot will not.
Over the next five years, the French brand plans to introduce seven new models in Europe. Whether one of them will be another GTi remains uncertain for now. Favey said no plan has been made yet.
