Over 12,000 Norwegian Volvo owners will receive V2L functionality as an upgrade
New versions of the Volvo EX30 with V2L functionality are now available, allowing the car to be used as a power source. There are also many who have already purchased the vehicle.

Starting this week, Volvo will begin rolling out its latest wireless software update to new and existing EX30 customers.
There are quite a few of these customers in Norway. The EX30 is the most affordable electric vehicle model in the brand’s lineup, and according to Volvo Cars, there are over 12,000 registered units in the country, including those of the Cross Country version.
The wireless update will be available to EX30 customers worldwide, but it will first be rolled out in Norway and Sweden.
Free update – but the adapter costs money
After the update, the car can function as a mobile power source—or power bank—whether you need extra power for your bike, at a cabin, or on a camping trip.
For existing EX30 owners, the update means the car gains a new use case long after it leaves the factory.
The update itself is free, but the V2L adapter must be purchased separately. Volvo informs elektribil.no that the original adapter costs 2,975 kroner.
There are also non-original adapters marketed as compatible with the EX30. The most affordable one we found through a search cost 1,690 kroner.

Plug & Charge Also Coming in Model Year 2026
The update also brings an improved user interface to the EX30, with a new context line and a redesigned settings menu. The goal is to make it easier to find and use the functions people need most.
Volvo further states that the update adds support for Plug & Charge, which can simplify fast charging in many cases. This part of the update is available only for vehicles from model year 2026 and newer.
With Plug & Charge, you can simply connect the car to a compatible charger, and charging starts automatically—without the need for apps, chargers, or anything else.
– Through wireless updates, we can continue to improve our vehicles with useful functions long after customers purchase them. This includes features they might not have expected the car to have when they bought it, says Alwin Bakkenes, head of software development at Volvo Cars, in a press release from Volvo.
Stops when battery drops below 20 percent
Using the car as a mobile power source is simple. The adapter is connected to the car’s charging port. Then, the desired device is plugged into the adapter and can draw power from the car. The solution functions roughly like a regular plug.
The system in the Volvo EX30 can deliver up to 3 kW of power at 16 amps, which is sufficient for most everyday electrical appliances and other devices.
Volvo states that the car supplies power as long as it is needed, but automatically stops power delivery if the battery level drops below 20 percent.
The V2L/battery bank function is also available on Volvo’s new SUV, the EX60, with more models to follow, according to Volvo.
