Faced with the threat of cheap electric cars from China—against which BYD has already shown its strength—the EU plans to respond with its own E-Cars: electric vehicles with limited size and power, but mostly manufactured within the European Union, priced at around 15,000 euros.

Several manufacturers have already started working on these low-cost electric cars. While Dacia was the first with the Dacia Hipster, Stellantis Group showcased the future Citroën 2CV at the Paris Motor Show, which would fit into this category. They are also preparing what is expected to be called the Fiat Koala, as well as a new urban electric vehicle from Opel, which is expected to revert to the name Agila.

New Opel Agila: 15,000 €, under 4 meters long, set to go on sale in 2028

Following the Citroën 2CV and Fiat Koala, both rivals to the Dacia Duster, Stellantis is expected to launch a third electric car by 2028: the new Opel Agila.

The news was reported by Italian outlet Quattroroute among others, citing a very credible lead. Last May, when Stellantis announced the launch of its E-cars, it released an image showing three models—the last of which bears a resemblance to the original Opel Agila: a tall, 5-door city car produced from 2000 to 2014 in two generations, with a length of up to 3.74 meters.

In fact, it is this compact size—under 4 meters, with the Dacia Hipster measuring only 3 meters—that the future E-cars will share, so this new Opel Agila is unlikely to exceed that dimension. The original Agila never exceeded 3.74 meters, and moreover, the prototype of the Citroën 2CV shown at the Paris Motor Show—where OMODA unveiled its cheapest SUV set to arrive in Spain—also has a length of 3.76 meters.

Inside, according to reports from several European media outlets, the new Opel electric car is expected to feature a practical dashboard with simple design, equipped with a multimedia screen in higher-trim versions… or a smartphone holder in the base models.

What is known is that if it does go into production, it will do so like its cousin the 2CV, not before 2028. Its price is estimated to be around 15,000 euros, as is the case with all E-Car models. As for its production location, it will be the same as that planned for the 2CV and Fiat Koala: Stellantis’ factory in Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy.

However, nothing is known about its engine, battery, and/or range. To maintain a price around 15,000 euros, both its power output and battery capacity are expected to be modest.

Its weight is also likely to be low, so performance should not suffer significantly, making the Opel Agila an efficient electric city car that can still handle highways or even long roads with reasonable confidence.
