The new generation Opel Corsa Electric in 2028. Only electric power and a price starting at 25,000 euros.
Opel has pushed the launch of the new Corsa from 2027 to 2028. Florian Huettl told Welt am Sonntag that the car will be entirely electric and is set to start at around 25,000 euros, which is approximately 106,000–107,000 Polish zlotys today.
For Polish drivers, this is a clear signal: the next Corsa will no longer offer a choice between gasoline, hybrid, and electric options. It will only be available as an electric vehicle.
The new Corsa will use the STLA Small platform
The next generation of Corsa is planned to be built on Stellantis’ STLA Small platform. The current model still uses the e-CMP architecture and is available as a gasoline, hybrid, and electric version.
The new generation aims to move away from this approach. Huettl stated outright that the Corsa of 2028 will be a purely battery-powered car. Technically, the STLA Small platform can also support other powertrains, but Stellantis is developing it primarily for electrifying its brands.
This is an important change, as the Corsa is Opel’s flagship model and one of its bestsellers. Germany aims to use it to make a stronger entry into the segment of cheaper electric vehicles, where competition will soon become very fierce.
Price is expected to drop, range to increase
Opel’s CEO suggests a starting price of around 25,000 euros. For comparison, the current Opel Corsa Electric costs between 30,440 euros in Europe, while in Poland the current model starts at 82,000 zł gross. It should be noted, however, that the Polish price applies to the current generation, not the new electric vehicle based on the STLA Small platform.
Opel also promises larger batteries and significantly better range. No specifics have been released yet. The current Corsa Electric comes with a battery of 46 or 49 kWh net and a WLTP range of up to 429 km. Specifications can vary, so real-world figures will have to wait.
The market context is also interesting. Huettl claims that conditions for a launch in 2028 will be favorable, as the EV market expands, charging infrastructure improves, and high fuel prices increase the affordability of electric driving. He even gave a specific example: at 2.50 euros per liter of gasoline, demand is expected to respond immediately. Opel still hasn’t announced a date for completely phasing out internal combustion engines.
Even earlier this year, the Corsa GSE is set to arrive at dealerships. It’s an electric hot hatch based on the old e-CMP platform, with a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds—fast for a Corsa.
We may hear more about this new technology still this year, when Peugeot unveils the second generation of the e-208 as the first model on the STLA Small platform. If Stellantis doesn’t go too far with cost cuts, the 2028 Corsa could be one of the most interesting small EVs for the mass market. What price in Poland would you consider reasonable?
