Omoda X: a striking newcomer with serious off-road ambitions

With the new Omoda X, the Chinese automaker opts for a strikingly rugged appearance. This crossover combines sporty lines with serious off-road capabilities and is also available as a fully electric vehicle. During its world premiere in China, it became clear that Omoda is taking a different direction with this model.
Omoda X blends sports car and SUV features
The Omoda X was unveiled in Wuhu, China, during an international event hosted by its parent company Chery. Founded in 1997, this Chinese automaker operates several brands, including Omoda and Jaecoo. The brand refers to it as a Cross Off-road Vehicle, or COV for short—a new term for a vehicle designed to combine the advantages of different car types. It aims to offer the comfort and practicality of an SUV, the styling of a sports car, and the capabilities of an off-road vehicle.
That sounds ambitious, but the initial images show that Omoda is at least trying something different in terms of design. While many modern SUVs increasingly resemble one another, the Omoda X has a distinct identity of its own. The car appears wide, muscular, and quite futuristic. At the same time, its silhouette remains recognizable as that of a modern crossover. This sets the Omoda X apart from the models we’re already familiar with from the brand. The Omoda 5, which we tested in detail earlier, is primarily an affordable SUV for everyday use. With the X, the brand is clearly targeting a more adventurous audience.

Futuristic design with sharp lines
Omoda calls its new design style MECHA. The inspiration comes from futuristic machines, airplanes, and science fiction-inspired designs. This is reflected in the angular body panels, broad shoulders, and striking lighting. The front end, with its sharp light units, stands out particularly. At the back, lightning-shaped taillights contribute to its recognizable appearance.
The Omoda X also features a sloping roofline, which helps it maintain a somewhat sporty appearance despite its rugged look. This sets it apart from traditional SUVs, which are usually much more angular and taller in design. Of course, whether everyone will find the design beautiful is another matter. The Omoda X is certainly not subtle. But in a market where new Chinese brands are constantly competing for attention, such a distinctive design can actually help it stand out.
Omoda X to Receive Electric Powertrain as Well
What’s particularly interesting for e-Drivers.com is that the Omoda X will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. Omoda confirms that the model will be offered worldwide in three different powertrain options: a regular hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric version.
The electric Omoda X will come in both a two-wheel-drive version and a four-wheel-drive variant. The latter naturally fits well with the car’s off-road capabilities. In an electric four-wheel-drive system, electric motors on both axles can provide extra grip and traction, although Omoda has not yet revealed how the drive system will be implemented exactly.
The manufacturer remains silent for now regarding the battery pack, power output, charging speed, and range. As a result, we lack the data needed to properly compare the electric Omoda X with other electric SUVs. It is also not yet clear which versions will eventually be available in the Netherlands.

More than just a rugged appearance?
Those who judge the Omoda X solely on its appearance might think it is merely an SUV with some extra off-road features. Yet, the Omoda boasts several characteristics that indicate the manufacturer does indeed consider use outside paved roads.
The ground clearance is 200 millimeters, while Omoda claims a wading depth of over 700 millimeters. This should allow the vehicle to navigate deeper water crossings, for example. These are interesting figures, though we will need to see in practice how well the X performs on unpaved roads.
The specified maximum towing capacity of 1,800 kilograms is also interesting. This would make the car suitable for pulling a sizable caravan or trailer. Additionally, the roof can support up to 75 kilograms, offering space for extra travel gear. It remains to be seen whether these values apply to all drive variants.
Notably, the Omoda features as many as 39 different storage options inside. This might sound a bit excessive, but practical storage space is always welcome, especially in a car marketed for vacations and outdoor activities.
A Chinese-style cockpit with physical buttons. It’s definitely possible!
Inside, Omoda carries through its futuristic design style. The dashboard features a symmetrical layout with a prominent X-shaped center console. According to the manufacturer, this arrangement is inspired by the cockpit of a fighter jet.
In front of the driver sits a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, while a 13.2-inch infotainment screen is positioned in the center. Fortunately, Omoda does not rely solely on touch controls. Frequently used functions are also accessible via physical buttons and knobs. We welcome this approach. More and more automakers are realizing that a large touchscreen isn’t always the most convenient solution for every function. Especially while driving, regular buttons are often simpler and faster to use.

When will the Omoda X arrive in the Netherlands?
Omoda and Jaecoo are still relatively new brands in the Netherlands, but their parent company Chery is aggressively expanding. The Dutch dealership network currently has around 25 outlets and continues to grow with the opening of new showrooms.
The Omoda X is set to be part of a model lineup that will eventually consist of six models. These models will come in different sizes and target various customer groups. The exact timing for the X to arrive in the Netherlands has not been announced yet, nor are the prices and versions available there known. So far, the manufacturer has only confirmed which powertrains will be offered worldwide.
With the Omoda X, the brand is at least showing that it aims to go beyond affordable electric family SUVs. Its design is distinctive, its off-road ambitions are interesting, and a fully electric all-wheel drive fits well with the car’s character. But ultimately, it will be the range, price, and actual off-road capabilities that determine whether the Omoda X becomes more than just a notable presence.
