Omoda X: A new Chinese SUV with off-road capabilities arrives, along with electric and plug-in hybrid versions

Omoda unveiled the Omoda X prototype at Chery Auto’s International User Summit, signaling the upcoming arrival of a new compact SUV in the Chinese manufacturer’s lineup. Its design is inspired by the ‘mecha’ culture, a Japanese science fiction genre featuring large vehicles or robots controlled by humans.

As a result, the Omoda X features geometric shapes, sharp edges, and intricate folds in its body design. It measures 4,954 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,702 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Its design language differs significantly from the company’s previous models and could set the aesthetic tone for its future releases.

Inside, the Omoda X features a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and a 13.2-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system incorporates the SIAS (Super Intelligent AI Space) platform, which uses artificial intelligence to enable more natural communication between the vehicle and the driver, eliminating the need for predefined commands to issue orders.

Although it is an SUV, Omoda claims the X is designed to handle off-road conditions, thanks to its 200 mm ground clearance and 700 mm wading capacity. However, it is not a true off-road vehicle (all indications suggest its chassis is of monocoque type rather than frame-based), but rather an SUV with certain off-road capabilities.

The Omoda X will have some off-road capabilities

The Omoda X will be able to tow up to 1,800 kg, as well as carry up to 75 kg of cargo on the roof. An interesting feature is that it will be equipped with a thermal camera capable of detecting obstacles, people, and animals from a distance of up to 90 meters, depending on operating conditions. This technology identifies heat sources, which is very useful in low-visibility situations.

Omoda has confirmed that this model will come in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric versions; it will also feature variants with all-wheel drive. From the start, its platform was designed to accommodate different levels of electrification, as it is likely a global product intended for sale around the world.

Its technical specifications have not been disclosed yet, likely to be revealed once the production version is launched. In any case, since it will be a somewhat aspirational vehicle, we can expect it to surpass the already known Omoda 4 and Omoda 5 in terms of performance... and probably also in price.
