Octopus Energy offers a wall box along with an electricity tariff

Octopus Energy offers German customers a package that includes a wallbox, its installation, an electricity tariff, and charging management. As part of this service, Octopus Energy handles the delivery and setup of a 11 kW Go-e PRO charger as well as registration with the electricity provider.

Octopus Energy is an energy provider based in London that is increasingly targeting electric vehicle owners as customers in Germany as well. With its new “FreeRide” package, Octopus Energy aims to simplify the installation of a home wallbox by delivering and installing it as part of a comprehensive package that includes an electricity tariff and charging management.

For the package now available nationwide in Germany, Octopus Energy charges starting at 2,599 euros. It includes a 24-month contract period. “Those who wish to extend it afterward can continue with the tariff under the same or similar terms,” writes Octopus Energy. In addition to the device itself and all installation and administrative steps required to get the wallbox up and running, it also includes up to 500 free kilometers per month.

The following explanation: Octopus Energy offers a fixed-rate electricity plan in this package along with smart charging control. The company claims to optimize this control within parameters set by the driver and refund at month’s end the costs for up to 90 kWh of smartly charged electricity—“which is equivalent to 500 kilometers at a consumption of 18 kWh per 100 km.” Optimizing in this case means that Octopus schedules the charging process during times suitable for the grid.

To ensure a clear advantage over internal combustion engines, Octopus Energy adds that if charging via the FreeRide package ends up costing more per year than refueling a comparable car, the company will refund the difference at the end of the year. Bastian Gierull, Octopus Energy’s German CEO, comments: “Those who buy an electric car simply want to get in and drive. Instead, many have to start by searching for the right charging station, an installer, and a suitable pricing plan. We take this hassle away from our customers. With FreeRide, everything is handled through one source.”
