Octopus Charge brings Electroverse-style app to North America
Octopus Energy US has just unveiled its answer to Europe's 'Electroverse': the Octopus Charge app. The new platform aggregates chargers from over 24 partner networks in the US and Canada, with users able to pay for charging sessions at cost.
According to Octopus Energy US, the new app is designed to help drivers seamlessly “find, start and pay” for EV charging sessions from charge point operators across North America. It effectively aggregates more than 210,000 EV chargers in the US and Canada from a range of networks, including bp pulse, Shell Recharge, EVgo, ChargePoint, FLO, blink, Circle K and more – mirroring the approach of Octopus Energy’s ‘Electroverse’ in the UK and Europe.
Drivers can then sign up for free and then search for these charging stations by location or ZIP code, filtering for charging speed, connector type, or network. The app features live charger availability, compatibility, charging speeds, prices, and an EV-specific route planner. Critically, Octopus states that each charging network’s price is passed through the app without any markup to the per-kWh cost.
In a statement, the company drew clear parallels between Octopus Charge and Octopus Electroverse, stating: “Since launching in 2020, Electroverse has become Europe’s largest EV charging platform, giving drivers access to more than one million public charge points across more than 40 countries through a single app and account. Now, Octopus Energy US is bringing the same customer-first philosophy that made Electroverse a hit overseas to drivers through Octopus Charge, helping make charging on the go as effortless as charging at home.”
Nick Chaset, CEO of Octopus Energy US, added: “Drivers shouldn’t have to juggle multiple apps and accounts just to charge their cars. By bringing public charging into one seamless experience, Octopus Charge gives drivers the confidence to hit the road, making charging one less thing they have to think about while helping remove another barrier to EV adoption.”
As electrek highlights, Octopus Charge pales in comparison to the size and scale of Europe’s Electroverse, which now features over 1.5 million public charge points and 1,500 network partners. Whether Octopus can make the same inroads into the US and Canada still remains to be seen.
