New leaks of the BYD Great Seagull reveal its final design and, ultra-fast Flash Charging?

BYD is preparing a major overhaul of its compact electric vehicle, the Seagull, which is known in Europe as the Dolphin Surf. Early images of test units show a model that differs significantly from the current version in terms of design and dimensions. The change is particularly noticeable in terms of size, as the new model grows considerably and approaches the dimensions of the Dolphin.

The new BYD Seagull has already completed homologation procedures in China, and new images of the model in use have now appeared. According to reports from local media, it measures 4.20 meters in length with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Compared to the current model, this represents an increase of 21 cm in length and 15 cm more in wheelbase, a change that should significantly impact the interior space available.

The design also represents a significant change. The new BYD Seagull moves away from the simpler shapes of the current model to adopt a more elaborate appearance, featuring a completely closed front end, several distinct lines, and polygonal-shaped lighting units. A new dark green color will also be added to the range, while various exterior elements aim to give it a more sporty look.

On the sides, we find door handles partially integrated into the body, tires in bright black, and B and C pillars visually concealed to create a more seamless glass surface. The rear also features a new design, with redesigned headlights and a large decorative element in the lower area that enhances the vehicle’s sporty image.

In any case, the increase in size is the most significant aspect of this refresh. At 4.20 meters long, the new BYD Seagull is much closer in size to the current Dolphin, reducing the clear distinction between it and its smaller sibling. The 425 mm increase over the previous model is particularly notable for a car that had previously been known for its compact dimensions.

A complete overhaul is also expected inside. Previous images suggested a cleaner-designed dashboard with a larger central screen and the elimination of a separate instrument cluster. BYD would still retain some physical controls, a decision that may prove practical given the trend of concentrating all functions on the screen.

The new cabin also seems to pay special attention to storage spaces for items. At the bottom of the center console, there is a large storage area accompanied by a surface for wireless phone charging. The two-spoke steering wheel also features a simpler, more minimalist design.

Regarding the propulsion system, the new BYD Seagull will retain its electric configuration, featuring a permanent magnet synchronous motor produced by one of BYD’s companies. The model approved in China achieves a maximum power output of 95 kW (129 HP), a figure that will be adjusted for the European market, where the current version already reaches 156 HP in its 40 kWh configuration.

BYD will also use a battery based on LFP chemistry, manufactured by FinDreams Battery, the group’s own battery division. As of now, all details regarding the new model’s capacity, range, or maximum charging power have not been publicly disclosed, so we will need to wait for official information to determine the capabilities of this new generation.

But undoubtedly one of the most interesting aspects of this leak is the photo showing the car next to a BYD ultra-fast charging station. This suggests that the new model will be compatible with Flash Charging stations, although it is unlikely to reach the MW levels of its older models, which can exceed 1,000 kW and charge in just five minutes. Still, the new model will not be an ordinary model in this regard.

There are still many details to be uncovered, mainly whether this new Great Seagull will make its way to Europe and, if so, whether it will replace the current Dolphin as we expect.

For now, BYD has not confirmed all the details of the model nor its arrival in Europe. What these initial images do clarify is that the Chinese manufacturer is preparing a much more significant change than one would expect from a simple update. The small Seagull grows to nearly match the size of the Dolphin, and it also gains a more sophisticated design along with driving assistance technology that previously seemed reserved for higher-end models.
