New Volkswagen electric car to take the place of two models

Volkswagen will bring the Tiguan name to its electric lineup. The new model is expected to arrive at the beginning of next year.

Rumors had already suggested this, but now it’s official. Volkswagen will use the Tiguan name for its electric range with a “new” SUV: the ID. Tiguan. The world premiere is scheduled for early October, with market launch expected in early 2027.

The new electric vehicle will succeed the current ID.4 and ID.5 models and will coexist with the “conventional” Tiguan, which will remain available with gasoline and hybrid powertrains.

The name change isn’t entirely surprising. The Wolfsburg-based brand initially identified its 100% electric models with numbers, a strategy that deviated from the brand’s traditional naming convention and didn’t always make it easy to identify each model’s position in the range.

However, Volkswagen has been shifting its strategy and bringing back well-known names for its new electric models. This is the case with the Volkswagen ID. Polo, which was first hinted at by the ID.2all prototype.

The new ID. Tiguan represents another step in this direction, introducing to the electric lineup a name with significant weight within Volkswagen. “Over 8.3 million Tiguan units produced demonstrate the strength and credibility associated with this name. The Tiguan represents a versatile and premium vehicle that embodies the essence of true Volkswagen,” said Thomas Schäfer, the brand’s CEO, in a statement.

Same name, different cars

Although the Tiguan and the new ID. Tiguan share almost the same name and SUV format, there isn’t much else in common between them. While the Tiguan is built on the MQB Evo platform — the same one used in models like the Golf — and offers gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines, the ID. Tiguan will be entirely electric.

The technical specifications have not been revealed yet. Nevertheless, it is expected that the ID. Tiguan will also be equipped with the new electric motors already seen in other Volkswagen Group models, such as the updated Audi Q4 e-tron or the new Skoda Peaq.

At the top of the range, just like with the ID.3 NEO, it is possible that the ID. Tiguan will also be available in a GTI variant, making it the third electric model from the brand to bear this designation.

This is a reality that may not please everyone, but it’s not entirely surprising either, especially since the ID.4 and ID.5 already come in a more powerful variant called GTX.

Completely new exterior and interior

Volkswagen has only shown the camouflaged ID. Tiguan so far, but some differences can be noticed. One of them, and perhaps the biggest, relates to its appearance, which has been completely overhauled with a shift away from curved lines toward a more square shape.

The similarities continue inside the cabin. Although the dashboard remains heavily camouflaged, it’s impossible not to compare it with what we’ve seen in Volkswagen’s recent models.

The biggest highlight is the return of physical buttons for climate control, but there’s more. There’s a new steering wheel and updates in the digital aspect, particularly regarding the screens, which should be exactly the same ones we’ve seen in the ID.3 NEO.

When will it arrive?

The new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is expected to be unveiled at the beginning of next month, with sales in Europe set to start in early 2027.
