You can’t ask for more than 6,000 €: 3.35 meters long, 265 liters of trunk space, and a range of 328 km.

Until now, to sit in the back of the Bestune Pony, one had to fold down the front seat and squeeze in like in traditional three-door cars. This small electric vehicle from Bestune, the Chinese state-owned FAW group’s own brand, was exactly three meters long and had a trunk capacity of 81 liters, barely enough to fit a couple of carry-on bags. Now it comes in a five-door version that is longer and much more practical, already available in China for at least 44,900 yuan, which is around 5,837 euros at the current exchange rate.

In addition to its own brands and vehicles, FAW is one of the most important partners for foreign brands such as Toyota and Volkswagen in China. For a long time, the Pony has been one of the most popular electric vehicles in China, but now, with this major change, FAW aims to revitalize a model that has lost its appeal. From January to September 2026, it delivered 47,929 units of the three-door Pony, 37.5% fewer than the previous year. The solution is simple: the same mechanics and friendly design, but with much more space inside.

Thirty-five centimeters that transform the car

The five-door Pony is 3,350 millimeters long, 1,540 millimeters wide, and 1,600 millimeters tall, with a wheelbase of 2,215 millimeters. It remains an urban car in the A segment, but compared to the three-door Bestune Pony, it is 350 millimeters longer and 30 millimeters wider, while being 30 millimeters shorter. For perspective, it is still about 35 centimeters shorter than a Dacia Spring.

The important details are found between the wheels: the track width increases by 262 millimeters, which is quite significant for a car of this size, and almost all of that extra space goes to the legs of rear passengers and the areas around the new doors. This is exactly what the Pony lacked to serve as a primary car for a small family in the city.

A trunk space sufficient for shopping

It still has four seats, but the trunk capacity increases from 81 to 265 liters. With the rear seats folded down, the capacity reaches 1,052 liters. Although the engine is located at the back, Bestune has not specified whether there is any cargo space under the front hood.

Exteriorly, it retains its square silhouette and round headlights, along with 13-inch wheels, semi-hidden door handles, a ground clearance of 130 millimeters, and five color options. Inside, all versions come standard with a 7-inch digital dashboard, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a rearview camera, while the higher-trim models add a 10.1-inch central screen.

Rear Engine and CATL Battery

A single electric motor located at the rear axle drives the rear wheels with 41 horsepower, enough to achieve a top speed of 103 kilometers per hour. It is a car for city driving and nearby areas, not for highways.

The batteries are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type and manufactured by CATL. There are two capacities, 16.97 and 27.19 kWh, offering ranges of 222 and 328 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is quite optimistic. Under the harmonized WLTP protocol used for European approvals, the ranges would be 182 and 269 kilometers. All versions support fast DC charging, achieving 30% to 80% charge in 30 minutes.

About 1,300 euros more for the two-door version

Bestune sells the five-door Pony in four versions, with official prices ranging from 44,900 to 54,900 yuan, which is equivalent to 5,837 to 7,137 euros. There is a launch discount of 5,000 yuan, or about 650 euros, bringing the starting price down to 5,187 euros. The three-door version is still available for between 4,537 and 5,577 euros, so the initial price difference between the two body styles is around 1,300 euros. Unfortunately, neither FAW nor Bestune has announced any plans to export the Pony overseas.
