Nio closes hubs in Cologne and Weiterstadt

Nio will close its hubs in Cologne and Weiterstadt near Frankfurt at the end of September 2026. After that, Munich will remain the only Nio Hub in Germany and thus the only in-house location with a workshop. For service, the Chinese manufacturer refers to a network of selected workshops.

Nio already informed the affected users about this step at the end of July 2026 in almost identical messages, which are available on the _Eletric Vehicles_ news portal. The startup cited current market conditions and the restructuring of its European business as the reason.
The two messages from the German hubs in Cologne and Weiterstadt were issued under the motto “Nio remains committed to the German market and its users”. In a response to owners in the community section of the Nio app, a Nio representative explained that the company had decided to send the notifications only to directly affected users. She described the closures as “a planned optimisation in response to a European market that is changing for all manufacturers, through tariffs, more competition and slower market development.” She then denied any withdrawal from Europe or Germany.
In the future, customers will be able to book maintenance appointments via the One-Click Service in the Nio app at trained workshops in their region. The message does not specify which workshops these are.
Two of three workshops to close
Unlike the Nio Houses, which are urban showrooms without their own workshops, the hubs also handle vehicle deliveries and service. With Cologne and Weiterstadt, Nio is now closing two of its three German workshops simultaneously.
Nio has also reduced its network of Nio Houses. In April 2026, according to _Electric Vehicles_, the _Manager Magazin_ reported that Nio was looking for new tenants for its then four German Nio Houses in Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. However, the Nio House in Hamburg was permanently closed in July 2026. The three locations in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf remain open.
19 registrations in eight months
The consolidation of locations coincides with a phase of sharply declining registration figures. According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, Nio recorded 19 new registrations from January to August 2026. This represents a decrease of 90.1 per cent compared to 191 units in the same period the previous year. In the entire year 2025, there were still 325 vehicles, and in 2023, there were even 1,263.
At the same time, Nio is restructuring its European operations. In March 2026, the manufacturer confirmed a comprehensive reorganisation of its activities in Europe. Since then, the organisation has been coordinated more at a European level and less on a country-specific basis. As part of this, Germany lead David Sultzer also left the company. As early as February, Nio had also realigned its sales in Europe more towards distribution partners – with the exception of Norway.
Nio will continue to support existing vehicles with service, warranty, and spare parts. It became apparent in May 2026 that Nio would not introduce a new model generation to Europe before the end of 2027 and would not build any further battery swap stations in the region. The European launch of the Onvo brand has since been postponed to 2028 or 2029.
