New Kempower charging deal powers up Canadian port operations

New Kempower charging deal powers up Canadian port operations
Kempower deals charging up two major Canadian port operations

The Finnish EV charging experts at Kempower are bringing high-speed electric vehicle charging infrastructure to all of Canada’s DP World Canadian terminal operations – and the first two sites are online NOW.

Kempower announced that it has signed a framework agreement to supply charging infrastructure and related services across all DP World terminals in Canada following the successful installation of high-speed charging infrastructure at Global Container Terminals’ operation in Vancouver, BC, earlier this month.

“This agreement with Kempower gives us a scalable, reliable charging platform that can support our operations today while creating the flexibility to electrify more of our equipment over time,” said Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada, in a statement.

Similarly, GCT reportedly ran a multi-day trial of a heavy-duty, battery-electric terminal tractor using only opportunity charging and reported it operated with near-total uptime.

“The system enables opportunity charging during shift changes and breaks, maximizing equipment availability while minimizing operational disruption,” explains Kyron Harvett, GCT’s manager of operations technology.

All about the use case

It's portty time! We talk clean trucks, hydrogen, and more with Port of Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba

Port operators do work that’s ideally suited to electrification. It’s all low-speed, extreme-torque, short distance, high-precision operation, all the time. And the quiet, vibration-free, instant power operation of electric drive is in its element. Logistics fleets like DHL and YMX knows this better than most, which is why the companies have put scores of electric yard trucks to work at supply chain sites across the US – all part of DHL’s goal to both phase out diesel trucks and YMX’s efforts to insulate themselves from the wild swings in diesel costs.

What’s more, with the potential re-launch of Federal Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) grants and private efforts like ZET TRUCK launching new incentive programs to help equalize the up-front costs of electrification, fleets have more reasons than ever to make the switch to electric.
