NEW opens 400 kW electric truck charging station in Niederzissen

NEW has opened its first public charging hub for electric trucks in Niederzissen: four loading points with up to 400 kW capacity. Shipping companies can charge at 0.39 euros per kWh initially, with additional locations under consideration.

NEW, an energy provider based in Mönchengladbach, has opened its first publicly accessible charging hub for electric trucks in Niederzissen, in the Ahrweiler district. The facility is located on the TD Truck site in the Scheid industrial area and is aimed primarily at freight forwarders and logistics companies. For NEW, this project also marks its entry into a new business area, as the company previously did not have any public charging services specifically for heavy transport in its portfolio.

Four charging points with up to 400 kW

The charging hub has four charging points. NEW states that the maximum charging capacity is up to 400 kW. However, this capacity is not available at all charging points simultaneously: when all four charging points are in use, the power is distributed, resulting in up to 200 kW per vehicle. On the operator’s information page, it mentions four fast charging points, each with “400 kW,” which likely refers to the possible peak capacity under low load conditions. NEW does not provide information about the manufacturer of the charging technology.

The location is connected to the medium-voltage grid. The charging stations are designed as through-road solutions, so tractor-trailers with trailers do not need to maneuver or disconnect. According to NEW, the facility is also suitable for cars with trailers, such as travelers with campers on their way on vacation. The location is complemented by a nearby truck washing facility.

Charging price and terms for freight companies

Initially, NEW offers an introductory rate of 0.39 euros per kWh. To qualify for this price, logistics companies must create a business account with the billing partner EVC-net and provide their NEW customer number. The documents do not specify how long the promotional price will be valid or what terms will apply thereafter. It is also unclear at what prices users can charge their vehicles without business registration, even though the charging station is explicitly marketed as a public service.

In addition, NEW offers volume contracts with fixed kWh prices throughout the contract period. Reserved charging windows are intended to ensure guaranteed capacity at agreed minimum usage levels, and rates are also provided for charging outside peak hours. Invoicing is automated, with reports on CO₂ emissions available upon request for ESG documentation. The company plans to integrate with transportation management systems (TMS) in 2026/27. NEW does not specify exact prices for these contract models, which are available upon request.

On the product page, the provider also mentions driver-friendly minimum standards regarding facilities, catering, and safety. However, it does not provide detailed information on what is available at the Niederzissen location.

Charging without own investment

NEW positions the charging hub as an alternative to its own depot stores. Freight companies are able to charge their vehicles without having to invest in charging technology and power connections themselves. “Especially where space and grid capacity are limited, public charging services will play an important role in the future,” says Dr. Niklas Rotering, head of customer solutions at the NEW Group. In fact, obtaining power connections represents a significant hurdle for many logistics centers, as high-capacity services in the megawatt range are often only available after long lead times and at high costs.

Due to its location in an industrial area along key transportation routes, NEW also sees this site as a component of the regional infrastructure in the Ahrweiler district. This is intended to create better conditions for the use of electric commercial vehicles in the region.

Additional Locations Under Review

Niederzissen is not intended to be the only location. The project serves as a reference for NEW’s future initiatives. According to Rotering, the company is already evaluating additional sites and discussing similar projects, particularly in its own service area along the Lower Rhine. On its information page, NEW is reaching out to potential site partners in addition to freight companies. The company has not yet specified any particular locations or a timeline for additional charging hubs.

The success of a single location with four charging points will likely depend mainly on utilization by local fleets. The opening rate of 0.39 euros per kWh is significantly lower than the ad-hoc prices charged by many public fast-charging stations for cars.
