In July 2026, new car registrations in Germany rose by 1.2 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 268,068 vehicles. This is according to an analysis of figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) conducted by the Association of International Automakers (VDIK).
Since the start of the year, a total of 5.1 percent more vehicles have been registered than in the first seven months of the previous year. That amounts to 1,752,461 cars in total, including 775,378 vehicles from international brands, which gave them a combined market share of 44.2 percent since the beginning of the year. In July, this share was 44.6 percent.
78,609 pure battery electric passenger cars (BEVs) were newly registered in July 2026, representing a 61.7 percent increase compared to the previous month. Registrations for international brands are expected to rise by 93.7 percent, exceeding the average, to 38,824 electric vehicles, accounting for 49.4 percent of the BEV market share. This is the highest monthly BEV market share for international brands to date.
In July 2026, BEVs accounted for 29.3 percent of all new passenger car registrations, about 10.9 percentage points higher than in the same month the previous year, representing the third-highest BEV market share on record and by far the highest since the end of government incentives for electric vehicle purchases in August 2023. Since the start of the year, a total of 446,615 BEVs have been newly registered, reflecting a 50.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. International brands accounted for roughly 45.5 percent of these registrations. The cumulative BEV market share for the first seven months of 2026 is 25.5 percent.
"The strong selection of affordable BEVs in the entry-level segment is very well received. International manufacturers now supply one out of every two battery electric vehicles in Germany, with more than half of them coming from Europe," emphasizes Imelda Labbé, president of VDIK.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also saw growth in July compared to the previous year. New PHEV registrations rose by 12.5 percent last month to 30,609 vehicles. This represents a market share of 12.5 percent, which is about 2.2 percentage points higher than the figure for the same month last year. In the PHEV market, international brands are expected to have put 12,529 vehicles on the roads in July, accounting for 40.9 percent of the total PHEV market.
In total, 194,402 new PHEV cars have been registered since the start of the year (+17.0%), giving them a cumulative market share of 11.1 percent of all new car registrations. International brands have held a 40.7 percent market share of the overall PHEV market since the beginning of the year.
BEVs and PHEVs combined accounted for 109,218 new car registrations in July, 44.1 percent more than in the same month last year. Their market share was 40.7 percent (July 2025: 28.6 %). Since the start of the year, 641,017 BEVs and PHEVs have been newly registered, giving them a market share of 36.6 percent.
