New vehicle registrations in August 2026: Electric vehicles account for 32 percent
In August 2026, 68,930 electric cars were newly registered in Germany, 12 percent less than in July. The overall market declined by 21 percent, causing the share of electric cars to rise to 32.4 percent.

The number of new vehicle registrations in Germany reached 212,563 units in August 2026. This represents a decline of 55,505 vehicles or 21 percent compared to the previous month, July 2026, when 268,068 vehicles were registered. The drop for electric cars was smaller: 68,930 battery-electric vehicles were registered in August, 9,679 fewer units or 12 percent less than the 78,609 electric cars registered in July. As a result, their market share rose from 29.3 percent to 32.4 percent. Plug-in hybrids saw 25,406 new registrations, a decrease of 5,203 vehicles or 17 percent compared to the 30,609 units registered in July. Their market share is now 12.0 percent, up from 11.4 percent in the previous month.

The development of electric cars
The decline in electric car sales was significantly lower in August at 12 percent compared to 21 percent for the overall market. The Skoda Elroq remains at the top, with its new registrations dropping from 3,541 to 3,038, yet it still held its position. The BMW iX1 moved up two places to second place with 2,449 units sold, although its absolute numbers also declined. The two Volkswagen models, ID.7 and ID.4, each lost around 1,000 vehicles and now rank third and fourth with 2,236 and 2,189 new registrations respectively.
The biggest jump within the top 10 was made by the Mercedes GLC Electric: Its new registrations rose from 1,472 to 2,164, pushing it up 11 places to fifth place. Even more significant changes occurred further down the list. The Tesla Model 3 saw its new registrations increase from 56 units in July to 1,605, placing it at 12th place, while the Tesla Model Y rose from 299 to 1,426 units, ending up in 15th place. The Cupra Raval improved by 15 places to 11th place with 1,663 units sold, and the Dacia Spring moved up 14 places to 16th place with 1,418 units sold.

In the plug-in hybrid category, the order at the top remained unchanged. The BYD Seal U leads with 1,280 new registrations, down from 1,821 in July, followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan with 1,161 units. Only two models in the top 10 saw increases: the BYD Atto 2 rose from 906 to 1,020 vehicles, moving up to third place, while the BYD Seal increased from 449 to 856 new registrations, rising 23 places to sixth place. Thus, BYD accounts for three of the ten most registered plug-in hybrids. The biggest decline on the list was seen in the Skoda Kodiaq, which dropped from 1,147 to 726 units, falling four places.
In August, among manufacturers, Volkswagen Group brands accounted for six of the ten most registered electric vehicles: Skoda with the Elroq and Enyaq, Volkswagen with the ID.7 and ID.4, and Audi with the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Additionally, there was the BMW iX1, two Mercedes models, and the Citroën ë-C3 as the only representative from a non-German or non-group supplier.
Throughout 2026, a total of 1,965,024 vehicles have been newly registered so far, including 515,545 electric cars and 219,808 plug-in hybrids. This corresponds to market shares of 26.2 percent and 11.2 percent respectively. In terms of model sales, the Skoda Elroq leads with 26,717 new registrations, followed by the Volkswagen ID.3 with 21,927, the Skoda Enyaq with 21,492, and the Tesla Model Y with 21,426 units. Among manufacturers, Volkswagen tops the list with 66,323 electric cars, followed by Skoda with 48,292 and BMW with 44,332. Mercedes, Audi, and Tesla occupy positions four through six. In the plug-in hybrid category, the Volkswagen Tiguan leads the annual rankings with 9,464 new registrations, just ahead of the BYD Seal U with 9,424 units.
