Peugeot appears to be considering a complete redesign of the 308 model. According to Auto Express, the goal is to develop a “Coupé-SUV Fastback” that fits between traditional SUVs and five-door hatchbacks. This concept is intended to offer higher efficiency than an SUV as well as more practicality than a conventional hatchback model.

The inspiration for this project comes from the 408 Fastback. The new body style could extend around 4.4 meters in length, which is slightly longer than the current hatchback version. Peugeot CEO Alain Favey confirmed to Auto Express that the company is exploring various options rather than simply updating models like the 308, 308 SW, and 408. They aim to find new approaches to reach more customers with these vehicle lines.

Design chief Matthias Hossann wants to strengthen emotional connections to Peugeot’s design identity in order to distinguish itself from new competitors from China. The design of the next 308 is intended to embody the “Feline Future” design language and build upon the Polygon concept from 2025. This design language focuses on “feline-like poses,” distinctive claw-shaped headlights, and prominent radiator grills.

Technically, the new 308 and its sibling models are supposed to be based on Stellantis’ new STLA One platform. This architecture is primarily designed for electric drives but can also accommodate hybrid technology. A key feature is the “Cell-to-Body” structure, in which the battery pack serves as the vehicle floor to reduce weight.

A new body style for the 308 might also be relevant for Peugeot’s sister brand, Opel. According to Auto Express, CEO Florian Huettl suggested that the next generation of the Astra doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional hatchback. However, an early production start is not in sight; per Peugeot CEO Favey, this could only happen by the end of 2029 at the earliest. Development is currently still in a very early stage.
