The new Opel Corsa is set to launch exclusively as an electric vehicle in 2028

The launch of the new generation of the Opel Corsa is being pushed back to 2028. As CEO Florian Huettl told Welt am Sonntag, the updated version of this compact car will not be introduced in 2027 as originally planned. “It will come in 2028, be fully electric, and cost around 25,000 euros,” the manager announced.

According to Huettl, the Corsa is Opel’s best-selling model and the leading compact car in countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. The new offering is intended to help establish electric mobility even in the entry-level segment. The design of the production model is set to be closely linked to the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo concept (featured image).

Huettl views the conditions for electric cars in Germany positively. He cites a “strong range of options,” an improving charging infrastructure, and targeted government support. Additionally, rising gasoline prices are accelerating the economic viability of electric vehicles for consumers.

"If a liter of gasoline costs 2.50 euros, we see it directly in demand," said Huettl. However, the Stellantis brand no longer has a specific date set for exiting the internal combustion engine market. Initially, they planned to build only electric vehicles starting in 2028, but now, due to demand developing more slowly than expected, they will continue relying on multiple powertrains for longer.

According to previous reports, the new all-electric Corsa will be based on the "STLA One" platform. This modular Stellantis architecture is designed to support over 30 new models and is set to launch in 2028. STLA One enables a "software-defined vehicle." Through a central control unit called the "STLA Brain," all electronic components of the vehicle communicate in a common language, which is intended to reduce complexity and production costs.

The STLA One is supposed to support hybrid engines as well, but not in the new Corsa. According to Opel’s CEO, the current model with internal combustion engine will continue to be produced alongside the upcoming generation of all-electric vehicles. Additionally, the Corsa is already available today as a pure electric car and with mild hybrid drive.
