NABU: German manufacturers must accelerate efforts on electric trucks

As the IAA Transportation opens in Hannover, Germany’s Nature Conservation Union (NABU) is calling for faster development of battery-electric trucks and rapid expansion of charging infrastructure. The European commercial vehicle industry faces increasing international competition pressure. According to NABU, Germany and Europe must now ensure that trucks of the future are also developed and produced here.

"The crucial question is not whether a transformation of the truck market will occur, but where vehicles of the future will be produced," says Merlin Jonack, NABU transportation expert. "Those who want to ensure value creation and jobs must accelerate the development of battery-electric trucks and safeguard and expand the necessary value creation in Europe. For this, the industry needs reliable political frameworks above all."

Battery electric trucks are now available for most application areas and play a crucial role in decarbonizing road freight transport due to their high energy efficiency. Therefore, NABU calls for maintaining Europe’s CO₂ regulations for heavy commercial vehicles. Manufacturers only received additional flexibility to meet these targets in May. Further relaxation would delay investments further and undermine planning certainty for manufacturers, logistics providers, and infrastructure operators.

At the same time, the expansion of charging infrastructure must keep pace with the growth in vehicle usage. The industry’s willingness to invest is evident from recent federal funding programs: a program initially allocated 50 million euros for private electric truck charging infrastructure was exhausted within hours and increased to 150 million euros on the same day. Other programs have also seen significantly higher applications than available funds.

"Policymakers must not pit infrastructure against demand," said Jonack. "Power connections need to be provided faster, depot charging needs to become simpler, and the public charging network must be expanded promptly. However, a lack of infrastructure is not an excuse to slow down market growth. Weaker CO₂ standards will not build a single charging station."

NABU advocates for a clear focus on battery-electric trucks. Scarce sustainable biofuels are urgently needed in other areas and do not provide a basis for a mass truck market. Public funds should be allocated primarily where the market has already scaled up: in power grids, charging infrastructure, and zero-emission vehicles.
