MVG is testing smaller electric buses for Munich

The Munich Transport Company (MVG) is testing two electric midibuses in regular service. The Solaris Urbino 9 LE electric and the Wrightbus WB9 are intended to demonstrate where smaller vehicles can effectively complement the bus fleet.
From August 17 to 20, the two models from Solaris and Wrightbus will operate simultaneously and around the clock with passengers on Route 135. The Wrightbus is scheduled to be used again in the following week. Through these tests, MVG aims to gain experience for “adjusting its bus network based on demand.” Midibuses are typically between eight and ten meters long and can accommodate about 50 to 60 passengers. This makes them particularly suitable for residential areas with narrow streets and routes where the passenger volume does not justify the use of larger buses.
The two vehicles are not the first midibuses to be tested by MVG this summer. As early as July, another electric model of this size class, the Sigma 8 from Wisdom Motor, was operating on route 135. Additionally, at the end of July, the transportation company tested an electric 18-meter articulated bus with the Scania Fencer F18.
MVG tests various bus concepts
The current trials with different vehicle sizes are part of a broader effort to test new concepts for Munich’s bus service. Meanwhile, MVG is also preparing the deployment of an automated electric bus through the MINGA research project in collaboration with MAN and technology partner Adastec.
To this end, a 12-meter-long MAN Lion’s City 12 E equipped with an automated driving system was used. Following tests on the MAN factory grounds, the electric bus is set to first be tested in Munich’s roads without passengers. Starting in autumn, a pilot operation by MVG with a closed user group is planned. A safety driver remains on board while the bus independently controls steering, acceleration, and braking among other functions.
